there are all types of projects you can do, such as take an old rusty metal plant stand or table, clean it and spray paint it to match your decor.

i also take old junky furniture and prime and paint it with discounted paint. Just spray paint the hardware and handles and bake in the oven to set the paint (low heat)

i have refabbed a ton of stuff, anything in particular you need or want?

i like black shiny paint on furniture. i am a "side of the road" type of gal!

also in my neighborhood (katy texas) there is a secondhand furniture place. there is lots of nice stuff in there from elderly downsizing thier lives. walnut, cherry, mahogany, maple etc.
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

Our old white daybed with bright gold "finials" was looking tired and out of date. I spray-painted it flat black and made a comforter cover out of black sheets and used brick red piping on it. For the same room, I spray-painted other items black, including various picture frames and a heavy-duty wicker basket (with feet and hinged lid) which used to be pink.

DH put legs on a large formica table top for me to use as a cutting table in the sewing room. I painted the table top a light tan with heavy-duty paint and made a skirt out of black sheets to go around it.

Paint is such an inexpensive way to completely transform things.
If a piece of furniture is solid wood with good lines or nice, turned legs, sanding/stripping and painting can give it new life.

Fabric is another way to redo things. I was given a large, really ratty-looking ottoman. I stripped it down to the wood and DH made a new structural top for it out of plywood we had on hand. I covered it with an old egg-shell foam mattress and thick batting before making a muslin undercover for it, then made an outer decorative cover.

Check out the decorating/trash to treasure section of the HGTV message boards for great examples.

    Default Paint from the Dump

Paint really is a great, cheap way to update or remake furniture and other household decor items. I'm not sure if this is the case everywhere, but my city's dump has a paint drop off area where you can also go through and take whatever paint or stain you want, for FREE! I have found full gallons of really good quality paint, in great colours. In fact, I was able to paint my powder room entirely with paint that I found at the dump (primer, paint for the walls, and trim). I've used stain that I found at the dump to re-stain and update old furniture too.
Check out the dump in your area!
