Staining is a lot easier than painting.
You don't have to sand down to the bare wood - just enough to get the shiny finish off.
Most stains tell you to brush on, wait a few minutes, and wipe off. That would get very messy.
I just bought some "staining pads" (basically a sponge covered with terry cloth) and wipe it on. To get the dark color, I didn't wipe it off, I just let it dry.
Then I used a wipe-on polyurethane finish - easier to control and a lot neater than the brush-on kind.

If you can't or don't want to try to change the knobs, take them off, scrub them really well, let dry and spray paint them whatever color you like.

You can do this - it's really pretty simple.

    Smile Fix an ugly dresser

You could measure your dresser top, length and width and take those measurements to a glass shop. Have them cut you a piece of smoked glass to place on top of your dresser. They will even round the corners or the edge to fit the contour of the top if you want. Then replace the drawer pulls with smoked glass knobs to match the top. You probably could find knobs where they sell cabinets and hardware. They might even special order them for you, if needed. This would give your dresser kind of a contemporary look. If you don't care for smoked glass, use clear glass. Good Luck !

You said you don't like the light wood floors either.A few years ago I got a dark floor wax used it on one of my friends light wood floor. It turned out really good and looked better than the light wood.He lived there 3 years and it only had to be done once.I can't remember the brand but they had both liquid and paste I used the liquid.

Thanks for the floor idea. I can't do anything about them though because we live in an apartment. But I were able to change them, they'd be done already.

If you haven't gotten started on that yet and still unsure, you can try decorating it. I usually love to paint or stain all that is dough and make it bright and fruity, that is just me. You can use these cute little design stickers and paste it against the draws. It sounds cheesy but it works wonders when you play around with it.

I think I'm going to go with staining it. I was going to paint it but decided I would rather keep the wood finish just wanted a darker color. Thanks for all your help everyone.
