Let's talk frugal hair care..............
What are your tips and tricks for making your $$$ stretch when it comes to hair care?
- All 3 of us go to the same hairdresser. She is someone we know from our former church so she gives us a discount. She charges $50 for all 3 of us (cut for ds; shampoo, cut, and style for dh; highlights, shampoo, cut, and style for me). Mine alone would normally cost $75 to $80!
- Our hairdresser would love to have us come every 8 weeks, but I stretch it to every 10 to 11 weeks if possible (depending on her schedule and when she's available for an appt.). For example: Say we go every 8 weeks... that's approx. $350/yr. not including tips. Now say we go every 11 weeks... that's approx. $250/yr. not including tips for a yearly savings of $100. I trim ds's as needed to be able to get by for so many weeks.
- I have naturally curly/wavy hair so I have to use product to straighten it. Most of the time though I just wear it natural and pulled into a ponytail. I was putting the product in my hair every time I shampooed and then realized what a waste that was. Now I only use it if I know I will for sure be straightening my hair and it lasts for a long time.
- We don't buy 'regular' shampoos and conditioners. We changed to an organic lifestyle about a year and a half ago and we have continued to pursue that making more changes along the way. There are many ingredients we are choosing to avoid so as you can imagine we are paying a fortune for shampoo and conditioner (one bottle is $6.79 for EACH). The health food store here had a sale recently with double packs (one of each) for $6.79 (making them half price each) so I stocked up by purchasing 8 packs. That saved me $53.74 plus tax and those packs will last me for many months.
- We use very little hairspray (don't bother unless I'm going out somewhere) so that really makes that stretch.
- I have very few hair accessories and I think practically all of them came from Dollar Tree.
- I'm looking into making my own deep conditioning treatments, hair masks, etc. from various websites.
- I let my hair dry naturally (only use the dryer on it at the end if I'm in a hurry for it to dry because I'm straightening it). That saves stress and damage on my hair and keeps it healthier.
Who's next?............

I stock up on our favorites when on sale. We have enough Shampoo and conditioner for the three of us to last until Feb or March. I hit the clearence sale at walmart a few months ago and got Shampoo & Cond. for $.70 a bottle
I do not blow dry my hair~ never have.
I have a friend who cuts my hair $7.00 a cut. DH & DS goe twice a month for haircuts. They both are too picky about it to let anyone esle do it.
I have made my onw hair masks, and Hot oil treatments.

I have been going every 7 or 8 weeks for my haircuts now, I used to go every 5 weeks. I buy shampoo when its on sale and when I have a coupon, same with hairspray and other products.

We get out hair cut at "haircuts for less". I used to pay $40 for a hair cut at a different salon and I don't even notice the difference. I wear my hear long, just past my shoulders, so I do use some products, but not many.
I always buy my shampoo and conditioner on sale for $.99 a bottle and stock up...I also buy it from Costco if there isn't a good sale in the stores. I straighten my hair too,but like Kim, I only use the stuff if I'm going to straighten my hair.

We buy our shampoos on sale for about .80 ea. Don't use much if any conditioner. We get our haircut locally for about $12 ea. and it's a quality cut. I only get a wet cut (without a style) not as much to save $ but I never like the way anyone else fixes my hair. :ponytail: I get highlights in mine but my dmom will do that for me for only the cost of supplies (saving me about $40 every 6 weeks or so). I buy my supplies for color at the beauty supply house and use a discount card and put the purchase on my credit card that pays me in airmiles---which I then pay off every single month. I do blow dry and use styling products but I use the suave brands as opposed to the more pricey brands, can't tell much difference.

Not much spent here.
I get a perm about 3 times a year.
The rest of the time I do my own hair.
It is short...no blow drying either, just wash & wear.

I cut dh's and dd's hair and trim my own bangs. I get my hair cut professionally maybe once or twice a year. None of us use a hair dryer, we just let it dry naturally. And I've recently discovered that I don't need to use conditioner every time I shampoo, only about twice a week, so that cuts way down on conditioner.

I normally am the one that puts off the cuts so the budget looks better. But lately the boys (13) have wanted their hair to grow out so I basically let them. Saves me a small fortune.
I also, have invested in this pump action wall mounted shampoo thingy to put in the boys bathroom. You know kids waste waste waste!!!!1
I get a great perm once or twice a year at JCPennys only when they have a 25% off perms sale and I always get a SPIRL. It lasts twice as long and the regular type does. I NEVER Blow-dry and I mix 1 part condictioner to two parts water and spray it on after I wash my hair as a leave in. That way most of it stays on my hair.
I also bulk buy when on sale. I enjoy switching shampoos up a bit and normally that consists of whatever is on clearence I use.
I do however use ASSIE condictioner because it has never been tested on Animals......Long soap box story I will not go there!

I spent $20 on my last hair cut. I used to dye my hair but I don't now, mainly because of the health concerns with hair dyes. I use hair geland blow dry when I work at our store, otherwise I wash my hair everyday and let it dry naturally. Now that my hair's short, I don't need conditioner but I always use it when it's longer. I always use organic shampoo which I get from our store (way cheap) and I find organic shampoo is much more concentrated than normal shampoo and you use much less of it.

That's what I love about the shampoo I'm using now! The more you talk about your store, the more I want to visit!Originally posted by forestdale

I cut the guys hair.
I only cut my hair if I'm grieving (so hopefully it doesn't get cut often) I got rid of my bangs several years ago, and now have a one length style that doesnt' require much upkeep.
I'm working on giving up my hair color (I'm two toned right now!) I hope to be all gray pretty soon.
I don't blow dry my hair unless it's a special occasion.

I have very long hair and only get a cut a few times a year
We cut ds's hair ourselves
I get highlights once a year and get compliments on them all the time?? *scratch head
I use cider vinegar on my hair every now and then to get rid of residue. Just remember to rinse well!
Never use hair products
Hardly ever blow dry - too damaging

I'm a stylist so I do my kids and Dh free of course. I get my hair cut for free and pay 1.50(for product) to have my hair highlighted.
We use only salon products. I get them for 50% of what you see in the store.
I figure we save a fortune!~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000
