what items shouldn't be bought new?
I thought we could have a little list of some items that are great to purchase secondhand and not new.
I could list a ton, but will start this off with clothing.
I seldom purchase new clothing. I just don't like to pay retail costs on clothes. I buy new clothes for everyone sometimes, but supplement with a lot of secondhand clothing. It's a huge savings for us.

Cars.
(Although I will admit both of mine were purchased new.)
And if you are going to buy them, books. But how about checking out the library?

For me, Tupperware! I hunt for it at garage sales, and generally buy it for a buck or so. But, brand new, it's SPENDY!

I buy sheets at yard sales. Not only do I use sheets for our bed, but I also cover our living room suit with sheets. We have a German Shepherd dog, and when she comes in this keeps her from ruining the furniture.

Children's books. So many fantastic ones in brand new condition can be found cheaply at yard sales and thrift stores. The same goes for board games.

Furniture, dishes, clothes, cars. Get plant cuttings and divitions from family and friends.
Books, shoes(mine mostly from garage sales) sports eqipment.
We even got landscape rocks kind of second hand, a big road project is going on and we got permision to set out a heavy duty trailer and when they came to a rock they put it in our trailer, we got around 5-6 hunderend dollars worth of rock for the cost of renting a trailer for 2 days (and we got a deal on that too)

DVD's and movies, CD's too. Most can be checked out at the library or purchased at garage sales.

Oh man I want the rock deal so bad. It's so flat here and I just don't even know where to get rocks. I've considered calling local farmers. Maybe I should look into wherever they're doing construction.Originally posted by Kimmomo3

We did that with mulch-- we put our pickup near where the road crews were chipping trees from the electric lines. They filled it for us a few times, then finally asked where we lived, and at the end of the day- they'd just bring their truck and dump it at our place. We got enough for us, my parents, dh's parent's and my sis.

Jigsaw puzzles. You can pay $5+ at the store, or, pick one up at a yard sale for a quarter.
YES! People like me, who are planting a new yard, have to pay someone to come in with a thing called a rock hound to break up all the rocks. I saved a small pile to edge a flowerbed, but, the rest were broken up. Check around housing developments.Originally posted by Sara Noel
