Frugal Tips - entries and hallways
So you don't think of these as being good places for frugality to take shape? Try these ideas.
- rugs on sale at Zeller's
- little triangular tables for by the front door were made by dh's co-worker's dh and given to us.
- storage bins for toques, mitts and scarves was given to us while helping a friend move.
- coats in the closet are mostly thrift store finds and gifts.
- toques and scarves are mostly handmade or gifts.
- Boots and other footwear is sale priced stuff. The only non-sale items are the orthodics inside them! We buy most of dh's footwear at Walmart. I have to buy better quality, so I buy walking shoes at Track and Trail when they have sales on. Dress shoes I wear so infrequently, I pick them up at the thrift stores.
- paintings on wall are mine. I painted on tempered masonite...it was much cheaper than canvas.
- we have an old medicine cabinet from a garage sale ($4) that I repainted and hung by the back door to hold sunscreen, mosquito repellant, etc.
- I made sheers to cover all windows.
- we have old cardboard boxes in the hall we use for recycling. I don't like this arrangement, but there's no room anyplace else in the house for them.
Our hallway downstairs includes a storage closet and is 4' wide. That gives us enough room for a row of bookcases (which dh made) down the length of the hall.
- bucket for mopping floors from dbil/dsil...part of the fish inheritance thing.
- vacuum cleaner on sale at Sears. We bought the one that was not hypoallergenic, but you could change the filters to put a HEPA filter in...making it hypoallergenic. In fact, you could use filtered bags if you wanted. We bought the one with the most versatility for the least amount of bucks. And guess what? It does a great job!
- duster is an el cheapo that I want replaced with a Flylady biggie.
- this is where I collect clothing for the secondhand stores.
- we still have an old 'diaper bag' backpack style bag we use when we go camping stored in here. In fact, all our backpacks get stored in the storage closet.
Our upstairs landing is quite big.
- our second computer lives here. It's the internet one I'm working on now.
- I have a spider plant inherited from dbil, sitting on top two laundry buckets filled with baby clothes from when the girls were infants. It's covered with a piece of teal seersucker I've had for years but is really out of date!
- the wall has a sample of my rug hooking on it, and a painting.
- the printer is only used when necessary.
- we refill ink cartridges.
- we buy paper on sale.
- we print both sides of the paper (and then recycle or shred when we're done with it).
- I use the computer to record recipes that I post on the boards. The program (Mastercook) also allows me to print out menus and grocery lists.
That's it! What about you? What do you have in your hallways and entryways? How do they help you in your frugal lifestyle?2012 Challenges
