When packing don't list the contents ON the box

Get a notebook ( and keep a seperate master list)..........on each box write which room the contents belong to and then either "sooner" or "later" or "yes" or "no"..........

This is so that only YOU know the contents and YOU can decide if the box needs to be open as a priority when you arrive at your destination.

Example, box 1. Kitchen -yes ( it contains, mugs, kettle, coffee maker etc. so will be needed sooner)

Box 2 kitchen no ( containing baking pans & rolling pin)
Box 3 living room yes ( contains radio, tv etc)
box 4 living room No ( containing knick-knacks, photo's etc)
( The note book and the master list have box numbers on AND a list of ALL the contents of each box).
Thats how I have packed for my last 5 or 6 moves and I moved about 21 times in 25 years I have now got it down to a fine art
This way you can open boxes as you need them, or room by room or as things comeup that you find you need..........evryone has a different way of doing it, but you don't want to have to open every box that says Living room just to find the radio right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The reason for keeping the contents secret ( as it were) is so that things don't go "missing", stuff happens and you don't want to find in 3 weeks after the move that your food mixer or mini tv has "dissappeared".
Sometimes things go missing by accident but it's always better to err on the side of caution.

Keep to hand ( in the car)all the things you need to make a drink and a snack when you reach your destination ( kettle/cups/tea/coffee/cookies/coffee maker/sandwhich toaster bread and a cooler bag with milk/cheese/butter/snadwhich fixings, you get the idea

Have toiletries and tp and towels in the car with you also bedding so the first things you do are make the beds up ( you will be too tired to do it properely if you leave them until you need them!)

    HTH?

Some great tips and I agree, there are some things that can just wait to be unpacked.

thanks for the hints! love those tips Karen!

I have been packing slowly the things we don't need right now. I have a list going of what is in the box. didn't write whhich room it goes in but I will be doing that. I did it with the most recent boxes.

defnitely being ruthless though! I have tossed so much! and the back of my van is full of bag of clothes to go to the women's shelter!

Just remember, the more you pack the more you have to unpack! Also, try and concentrate on a room at a time instead tackling something here and there. Walking into room after room of half-packed, completely cluttered can make one feel overwhelmed. Take breaks and moments to daydream about how beautiful everything will look in the new house and that will help to refresh your spirit.

I also got to where I would pack a few days worth in an overnight bag, like I was traveling. Clothes, toiletries, you name it. I knew where it was and it wasn't a disaster if the toothpaste was in the box at the bottom of the box pile. That overnight bag saved me many frustrations in my many previous moves.

    Bring on them baby steps...
    Step 1: done
Step 2: waiting on amount, hubby had followup colonoscopy, I had visit to ER with followup procedure
Step 3: to follow, won't know aim until things settle
Step 4: to follow, currently at 6%
    Step 5: grown child
    Step 6: huge mortgage ANNIHILATED!!
    Step 7: ahhhh....
