    Default Uses for ammonia?

I bought some ammonia yesterday because I wanted to make my own glass cleaner (almost out of the store-bought stuff). What proportion ammonia to water should I use? I will be reusing the bottle the glass cleaner came in to give you an idea of the amount being made.

What else do you use ammonia for around the house? I know the smell is, well, pungent, but it's cheaper than buying a bunch of cleaners.

    Thanks is advance!

I don't know the proportions for window cleaner. I always just used 1/4 c. vinegar in a 1/2 gall. of warm water for that.

Ammonia can be used to clean ovens. Put about 1/2 c. in a small glass bowl in the oven, shut the door and leave it sit overnight. In the morning, open the window (ammonia stinks), open the oven, wipe it down, and the gunk comes off great! At least that's what I've heard. I've never done it. I'm asthmatic and the smell of ammonia just about keels me over. Cleaning the oven is DH's job. Oven cleaners bring on an asthma attack here.

I make glass cleaner without ammonia because the odor gives me a headache. Here's my frugal recipe...

    1 cp water
    1/4 cp white vinegar
1 TBSP dishsoap (I use Mrs. Meyers lavender scent.)
a few drops of essential oil, if desired

Works great and smells wonderful! I also splurged and bought a window polishing cloth from Target, because paper towels caused streaks, and I hate the mess that newspaper ink leaves on my hands and clothes.

I just use club soda for washing mirrors/windows. Works great.

As for ammonia, I use it to mop my floor. I just use a little with a lot of water. I also use 1/4 cup of ammonia in the washer when I wash sheets. It removes any body oils that regular detergent may not.
