When we travel, we always stock up on juice pouches for the kids ahead of time. They cost a buck fifty for ten of em, so it breaks down to 15 cents per drink. That's alot cheaper than grabbing the kids a soda or other drink on the road. With juice pouches, you can stick em in the freezer and after they thaw for a while, they're like a slush. Or, you can freeze em just to keep other stuff in your cooler cold. It's a good $ saver for us.

I agree, take some snacks and drinks with you in a cooler. If your kids get bored in the car, hit the dollar store for little presents that you can give him like every hour! This helps with the boredom factor.

Check out the travel info center at your destination. They usually have great coupons for $ off meals and attractions.

Default If you and/or your spouse like to drink water

buy a gallon and take smaller bottles with you and refill them as needed. You can get a gallon of drinking water around here for as little as .35, but a bottle at a c store or market is .98 for 6-12 oz. You pay more for most bottled water (by the small bottle) than you do for gasoline, frequently.

Also, try and do a little research on where you can stop that's not right on the highway that's close. The prices for gas, food, etc. usually go way down. We've found some great diners this way. Or, if you don't have time to do that, ask someone who works in a gas station where they go for lunch, if it's close.

    Hope this helps!

For a 5-6 hour car drive I would say bring cooler with sandwiches, chips, fruit, juice, water by the gallon (as pp mentioned) and some snacks for the trip there and back. (most people plan for trip there but do not pack enough for trip back)

If condo has kitchen ( probably does) maybe make some meals for dinner and bring to just reheat so you are not spending days cooking...etc. Bring some cereal, pancakes, sausage, etc for breakfast and maybe some lunch type things. Eating out is the most major expense when we travel. So having a condo would be wonderful to be able to eat at "home". Also when headed out for day make sure to pack snacks, and drinks.

If you are looking for souveniers (sp?) look in gas stations as they are probably cheaper then the gift shops. And you have less chance for over buying as there is not as much vacation items.

Fun things to do can be researched online before you go. type in frugal or cheap then the vacation spot. Some things are off the beaten path that you may find to be funner and cheaper in the long run.

And most of all bring camera and have fun!

Should have included this, sorry. I'm assuming all you folks know about gasbuddy?

If we were going on vacation, I'd figure out where I was likely to need gas, and use gasbuddy to get the gas cheapest.

See gasbuddy.com if you don't know it.
