How to Clean Pet Feces and Urine Stains

Removing feces stains can be accomplished by first scooping up any excess with an old spoon or spatula. Using a mixture of 2 tablespoons of ammonia to one cup of water, blot the stain to remove residue and rinse with cold water. Repeat if all of the stain is not removed. To remove lingering carpet odors from pet feces, sprinkle baking soda on the stain. Let the baking soda sit overnight, and then vacuum. Currently on the market are enzyme based products such as Bio-Aid or Nature's Miracle that work equally well.

Caring for and cleaning up after your pet does not need to be a daunting task. Always remember, though, that a cat or dog has a sense of smell that is 10 times greater than humans. The pet will return to the same spot if the odor is not eliminated. Many products on the market today will clean the initial stain. The biggest issue with cat urine is that the odor inevitably will return unless the stain is treated properly to begin with. Animal urine is composed of three elements. These are urea, which the sticky tacky part, urochrome, which is the pigment or color element. and the uric acid crystals and salts. The first two elements can be easily removed. It is the uric acid crystals that cause the returning odor on hot sticky days, or when it rains. Uric acid contains non-soluble salt crystals, which tightly bond to the surface. Removing these uric acid crystals effectively removes the odor from your home.

One of the most highly recommended products for the removal of urine stains is Urine Off. This product is enzyme based, which attacks and destroys the uric acid crystals. Other veterinarian recommended products are Atmosklear Odorless Odor Eliminator, a spray product that Neutralizes the uric acid crystals. Also veterinarian recommended is Feliway. Feliway comes with two products - a diffuser that is plugged into an outlet that controls odor over a 500-650 square foot area, and a spray that is used on areas of the home that the cat is marking.

A solution using common household items is made by mixing one part water to three parts white vinegar. Place something heavy, such as a laminated book, over the stain. This stops the solution from simply evaporating into the air, and allows it to work. Do not blot. Allow the solution to dry. Step two involves mixing a solution of three parts water to one part vinegar, and repeating the process. When completely dried, use 1 teaspoon liquid detergent to one cup of water, and thoroughly cleanse the area, blotting it dry. The vinegar smell will dissipate in a few days.

I've been using straight white vinegar. I think it works well.
