emergency car kit tips?
Do you have a car kit in case of an emergency and if so what is in it?

I use an old beat up Rubbermade Tote box and in it I have:
* spare change of clothes - tacky stuff that still fits but not donated to charity LOL
* old runners and old snow boots
* extra hats/mittens/longjohns
* zipper seal baggie with the hard kind of granola bars and mixed nuts
* simple homemade first aid kit and wetwipes & SPF & mosquito repellent
* shovel - though not in the box but in the trunk
* flashlight
* blankies
Since I dont travel too far from home - this gets me through the year. If I am travelling thats when I toss extra stuff in that I 'may' need. Mostly this stuff in the box never gets used.2012: The Year Of The Purge!

1) blankets (PLENTY) - way more than you'll need. I've used them at accidents and such and never retrieved them. Carry them year-round.
2) some small snack items and 12-24 bottles of water.
3) first aid kit
4) several flashlights and battery changes
5) I no longer carry flares given the pictures of cars, trunks, etc that exist online from people (including cops) having road flares blow up. The pictures of police cruisers with burned out trunks really put me over the hump on this one. I now carry a couple of magnetic LED road flare/flashers like the ones at northerntool.com.
6) a good knife or two - I always find the need for them
7) some way to cut myself and the front seat passenger out of a seatbelt that you can reach from either seat. People OFTEN overlook this thinking it isn't an issue.
8) gloves - several pairs of el cheapos
9) spare clothes
10) packet of papers with local emergency phone numbers, shelter addresses, personal phone book, maps, etc. These are not the things people think about until AFTER they need them. Scrambling during the emergency isn't helpful nor the best tactic.
11) folding shovel and small saw
12) container of one of the commercial loosening solvents -rusted nuts and fittings can be a problem when stranded.
13) dog toys, feeding/watering bowls, dog blanket, etc.
14) soon there will be baby stuff in the trunk!
15) jumper cables
16) one of those small portable air compressors...about the size of a toaster these days!
17) handful of tools
18) quart-sized water bottles.
19) couple of books for the down-time
20) small backpacker cook-kit and sets of utensils...I've been stuck in WAY out of the way places!

dh is diabetic, so we have glucose tabs, gel, and Glucerna bars, in case he 'crashes'.
I keep a couple of those plastic ponchos that are sometimes found for a dollar or two.
And an umbrella.
Sunblock
Hand wipes (antibacterial is nice, but regular or baby wipes will do).
Gloves and a hat (warm ones).
