Wink Saving $3,695 in driving and gas costs

    Dear All:
I am going to be saving $3,695 this year in auto associated costs (gas, mileage etc). In talking with a coworker I found out my job offers a free yearly pass on the public transportation (bus and light rail train) which is offered in my city. This is so convienent because the bus and light rail train stop right in front of my company. Currently I am paying $4,800 per year in auto associated costs, I base this on paying fifty cents per mile to operate my car. I do have a short drive to the light rail station but other than that I am home free. GOD IS SOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!

More companies should do this, and cities should step up and help them. Here we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. It's not effecient to take the bus it runs every hour. So we drive. The city can't keep up with the city expansion because no one takes the bus, so $ isn't there to do so. If companies would step up or the city step up and talk to the companies, in particular those that have easy access to bussing, major malls, downtown, etc, and subsidize that some, it would be a great incentive to use the bus, while giving the city working capital to expand and make the bussing efficient and not so much time wasted waiting for a bus, or on the bus.

Wow! You can take the money you save by not spending it on traveling and attack the debt snowball with a vengeance!

That's so cool your company does that. My commute is only 10 minutes, so I drive (in the summer I'm thinking I may ride my bike on "non-travel" days). There isn't a lightrail station near our office anyway...

Nice perk! Another bonus is that you can read, knit or something while you enjoy your stress free ride in.

If it's only a short drive to the station, maybe you can go by bicycle?

But bear in mind that this suggestion comes from a Dutch girl who will cycle in any kind of weather and all kinds of clothes (incl mini-skirts and silk shirts).

That is a great perk, if we had a direct busline I would look into it. I would have to walk a mile or so to the nearest bus stop from my house (there's no parking there or even a bench to sit on or a covering to wait under) Then I would have to catch that bus to a mile or two from work and walk the rest of the way through the scary parts of the inner city. Somedays or some times of the day I might even have to switch buses to get closer to work. If the buses were more efficient and cleaner/safer around here I would consider taking them over driving.
