Default Two ways to slash your long distance costs

If you do a lot of long-distance calling, you can cut that cost dramatically. One way to do this is with a 10-10 service. This means you have to dial a bunch more numbers, but this can reduce your long distance charges to as little as 2.5 cents per minute. However, you have to shop carefully for your service as some of these services are a lot more honest and straightforward than others. Read the fine print before you sign up and don't forget that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Note: you can get information on 10-10 services by Googling “10-10 service.”

Second, your phone company may offer a "talk all you want for a set amount plan." For example, our local carrier offers a bulk plan that lets make all the long distance calls you want for just $25 a month. Clearly, you need to be a big long distance user for this to make sense. But if you are, it is definitely something to ask your phone company about.

Thanks Frugal Doug ~ great tips!

I'd also like to add, most cell phone companies now offer free long distance as well. This is how I make ALL of my long distance calls.

I'd also add that if you are already using high speed internet (I have to for school) why not add Vonage or the like? I have the same number I had before but unlimited local, long distance, caller ID,etc for $25 a month.

We used to use a 10-10 service and they are great. We had it on speed dial. Now however we take advantage of our already paid for cell phone long distance. We have every evening after 8 free and beginning at 8 on Friday all weekend and all holidays. I only pay about $3 of long distance on my regular phone anymore and wouldn't have to even pay that much if I'd remember to use my Sam's calling card. That's another very good option and you can put those card numbers into your speed dial as well. I think mine is .03/min. .

Great tips. We have LD on our cell phones and it is figured in our package so we use if for all calls.

I have unlimited long distance on my cell phone, so I use that most of the time.

The rest of the time, I use Skype. It's $30 for a year of unlimited outgoing calls anywhere in North America.

I found an adapter on clearance that can be used with a regular phone, so, I don't even have to ditz around with a headset mic.

If you're using your home phone to call long distance
    check out:

Very cheap long distance and you add the amount of
money you want to spend. We used this for quite a
few years before we got our cell phones.
