Does anyone buy the big Coscto cans of ketchup?
I ran out of ketchup last night (don't know how I did that) and I'm afraid DS #1 is going to go on a meal boycott if I don't get some soon.
We go through quite a lot of ketchup in our house and I was wondering if anyone ever bought the large costco cans of ketchup and refilled the plastic bottles?~Jessica

I do! DD eats ketcup on everything, broccoli, green beans, egg noodles. S I buy the giant can. I open it with a church key can opener,(the trianlge type). Then I use a large plastic coffee can lid to cover the can while it sits in the back of my refrig waiting to refill the bottle that goes to the table evey night.
DD is now 14 and I have done this for years with no ill effects. When I get to the bottle of the can I cut the whole lid off and scrape the can with my rubber spatlua. I use a funnel to refill the table bottle with.

We use to. Our son use to go through catsup like he was making a meal of it. Man I wish I had thought of the plastic coffee top cover. I sure could have used that idea.
I just refilled the 4 lb. plastic bottles we got from the supermarket.

We have a zillion ketchup bottles saved. When we open a can or other larger container, we refill all the smaller ones and throw those in the fridge on the garage. I have a thing about things sitting in the cans though.
We do that with mustard, cooking oil, and syrup too.Beak-1996, Toad-1998, and Q-1998

I've thought about saving the smaller bottles I have and buying the large can from Costco. It is a lot cheaper. I'm not sure if I would leave it in the can for long once it is open. I've heard you shouldn't store food items in open cans in the fridge. Not sure why though.

OK, I found out why....
This is from eatwell.gov.....
When you have opened a can of food and you're not using all the food straight away, empty the food into a bowl, or other container, and put it in the fridge.
Don't store food in an opened tin can, or re-use empty cans to cook or store food. This is because when a can has been opened and the food is open to the air, the tin may transfer more quickly to the can's contents.
This advice doesn't apply to foods sold in cans with resealable lids, such as golden syrup and cocoa.

We buy the big cans and then I transfer the leftover to several ziplock freezer bags and freeze the ketchup until I use it.

FYI - the costco "cans" of ketchup are no longer cans!! They are now plastic and come with their own plastic lid - I was so excited!!!
AND - I can save this plastic container and make my OWN ketchup now!
