Anyone know what would cause this to happen...
I made a zuchinni casserole from all the fresh goodies from my parents garden...
I took it out of the oven(and it looked so yummy)and set it on the counter and turned to grab a towl and like literally the glass pan blew up and shattered glass everywhere. I also had a tuna casserole on the stove. I had to throw all my hard work away and wanted to cry.
This is a good(was) glass baking dish that I cook with all the time. The oven was only set at 350 which is safe for this dish and was only in the oven for 30 minutes.
Dh helped me clean all the glass up and I said lets go out to eat.
That was also his lunch tommorow down the drain...*sigh*
Glad my head was turned when the glass exploded. Never in all the years of cooking have I had this happen.
Any ideas what would cause the glass to shatter when it was out of the oven?
TIA

This happened to me once and it was because I had put a hot glass casserole under cold running water. The dish literally exploded in front of my eyes. Like you, I was lucky to be looking the other way.
Did you set it down on something cold? Wet? Was the air particularly cold in that area? Really, the only thing that would cause that to happen is extreme temperature changes.
I'm glad you weren't hurt!

No, it was the same place I always set my food down fresh out of the oven. It was just sooo weird. Dh even asked me those same questions.... About the temp change and I can't think of anything different I did. It's just so wierd but obviously something went wrong... My dh asked if maybe there was a 'crack' in the glass that could cause it?
Thanks hwmabire3, glad I was not hurt either.

This happened to my friends slow cooker. It just exploded when she was at work one day and the food and glass was everywhere. I keep forgetting to ask her what the manufacturers response was, she was going to write a letter.

Other than a temp. change I'm not sure why it would do that either but I'm glad you weren't hurt.

Very scary. I'm glad you weren't hurt. Could you have had a refridgerated item sitting on the counter prior to putting the hot dish on it, so the counter was cold? The only time I've ever had tempered glass shatter like that is with fast temperature changes.

It was the Zuccini.
It didn't WANT to be cooked.
It wanted to be eaten in it's raw state.
You've upset it and it just blew up at you.
I sure am glad you are okay. To think of what COULD have happened is just aweful.
But, I suspect it had a crack that you didn't notice that made it weak. A temperature change will break the glass.

Last year, I saw a news special on this. The one company that is known for making really good glass pans (and of course, right now, the company name is escaping me) has always had problems with complaints for this type of thing.
Typically, they said it was a temperature change that causes it. But they also said that with age, the glass pans can get hairline cracks (that even looking for them, you would never see them, they are so tiny) that cause problems when the pans are removed from the oven and begin to expand.
If the dish was getting older, or had been loved & abused through lots and lots of cooking with it...this might have been the problem!

Spontaneous combustion??? haha
I had something like that happen to me once. I was cooking fish in my EXPENSIVE PAMPERED CHEF stone in the oven and I decided to add another filet to cook. Well, duh.....I put a cold fish on the hot pan in the oven....yep, it broke. When I heard the noise from the kitchen, I knew immediatley what had happened. Yep, we went out to eat too!!
Sorry this happened to you. Very scary, and glad you weren;t hurt!

Wow, I am so glad you weren't hurt. I can't even imagine how hurt you would have been had you not been looking the other way.

Pyrex. My father sent an article to me about it when they covered it.

Thanks for the information on Pyrex. My Mom has some really ancient glass pie plates (probably close to my age) and I'll tell her to be careful as she uses them.
