Very basic corn dogs
I'm always looking to expand my cooking repetoire (sp?), and right now I've got some corn meal in my cupboard and I'm tired of corn bread, so I'm thinking corn dogs!
I want a *very* simple recipe made from very basic ingredients, and I want one that I can make in sets of 8-16 dogs and freeze or refrigerate for eating later.
Here's the best I've come up with on a google search:
Vegetable oil for frying
1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for dredging)
2/3 cup yellow cornmeal
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1 egg, well beaten
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
10 Hot Dogs
Place 1/2 cup flour in pie pan and set aside (for coating hot dogs later).
Mix cornmeal, 1/3 cup flour and salt in a bowl. Add milk, egg, and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Mix well and set aside.
Roll in flour to coat, shaking off excess. Dip hot dog in cornmeal batter, then fry in oil until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
Would these keep well in the fridge or freezer, or does anyone have a better suggestion (that doesn't complicate the recipe or ingredients list too much)?

how about some hush puppies......
**Hush Puppies**
1 c. cornmeal
½ tsp onion powder
½ c. water or milk
½ tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
Mix above and shape into 1 inch balls, fry in oil until well browned.
the corn dog recipe i have i haven't tried it yet and when i do i don't think i will use shortening...maybe oil could be substituted?
and instead of vienna sausages and using hot dogs you probably want to increase the recipe amount....
**Corn dogs**
½ c. cornmeal
½ c. flour
1 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
1 T sugar
1 T shortening
½ c. milk
2 cans Vienna sausage
combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, & sugar, mix well, add shortening & milk, stir into a smooth batter, dip sausages into batter & coat well, fry til golden brown.
if you try it...please report and let us know if its any good...tks!

Sugar folks SUGAR! The absolute key to browning is a tiny bit of sugar. Even one teaspoon for the entire batch will do it!

I make my concoction.....Lazy Man's Corndogs....
Make cornbread batter, pour into pan. Place hotdogs into batter in pan. Bake according to cornbread recipe. Can be served with syrup or even topped with chili. It's good with breakfast sausages and smokie links too.Kim

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Original recipe was a major dud, I'll try some of the fancied-up versions.

Why would anyone ruin a perfectly good hot dog like that???? Everyone knows you wrap it in a slice of cheapo white bread, slap on some mustard and call it good!!!

I have had the breakfast sausage/ pancake version, which is not bad dunked in syrup.
