Default Looking for a tried n true recipe for a salad/side dish

We are invited to a BBQ on Saturday. I thought I'd make my killer potato salad and remembered that one of the people there can't eat onions. So I'm looking for a yummy side that goes well with shish kebabs (beef, I assume).

Can't have seafood in it (1 is allergic) and either no onions or something that I can set a portion aside before adding onions. Has to serve at least 8 and be yummy Oh and no marinated bean salad-type recipes please.

    Thanks very much!

I make large pasta salads with the following ingredients:

    Extra Zesty Italian Dressing
The three-colored (green, orange, yellow) Spiral noodles 'cause I like the color and shape.
    black olives, sliced
    chopped tomatoes

    optional because sometimes pricey:

    shredded parmesan cheese, large croutons

Cook the noodles first, rinse in cold water, throw it all together in the fridge. Add croutons last so not soggy.

Can't you make the potato salad w/o the onions?

As a quick and easy side: coleslaw. Buy a bag of slaw mix (reg or broc) and then a bottle of either slaw dressing or 3 cheese ranch. Use entire bottle to coat one bag of mix. You can save a portion or make another bag using a vinegar based version as well for the person with the allergies.

I was going to say the same thing. I never, ever use onions in mine. Whenever we have a family function, whoever is in charge of potato salad either makes it without or sets aside a separate bowl without onions for DH, DD, my cousin and me.

This recipe for Megga Egga Macaroni Salad is one of my new favs. I use regular mayo and you can leave the onion out (or chop super duper fine) if you must. Even picky eaters like this one. I halve the recipe since it makes tons.

If you are looking for a hot side dish, this goes well with pretty much everything.

I do this but I also add green olives and diced green, yellow, red pepper.

I know its more involved that you would want to do but if it were me........

The kabobs really hit popularity in the 70's. I would probably make dipping sauces to go with it, maybe even some fondue. Of course with this 70's meal the only salad that would go with that is a classic lettuce wedge with blue cheese dressing with bacon.

    Can we come?

I was planning on making a specific recipe with only 4 ingredients (plus salt & pepper) so the red onion is crucial to the flavor combination.

I made a big pasta salad last weekend so DH and I are kinda burned out on it - but that megga egga macaroni salad sounds good. I'll make that and jazz it up a little.

Josephgoins - I'm sure my friends won't mind if you tag along!

    Thanks again everybody

I've only had potato salad made with potato, egg, mustard and mayo (sometimes with pickle, too).

Would mind sharing the recipe for yours? Even though we don't onions, I've got a 14 year old who eats the things raw and by themselves - like they were apples. Yuck!!! He would probably like to try your recipe.

    TIA

LOL your son is quite the onion eater!

Its potatoes, mayo, cooked crumbled bacon and diced red onion. S&P. When I make a batch its about 3 lbs potatoes, 1 lb bacon, and about 1/2 large red onion. The bacon/onion combo gives all the flavor. I think your son will enjoy it!

This is a really delicious but different potato salad, and you could just omit the onions, there isn't a lot in the recipe, Three-Potato Salad - 377543 - Recipezaar
