NRDC: Mercury Contamination in Fish - Eating Tuna Safely
From FDA:By following these 3 recommendations for selecting and eating fish or shellfish, women and young children will receive the benefits of eating fish and shellfish and be confident that they have reduced their exposure to the harmful effects of mercury.
- Do not eat Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, or Tilefish because they contain high levels of mercury.
- Eat up to 12 ounces (2 average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury.
Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.
Another commonly eaten fish, albacore ("white") tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna. So, when choosing your two meals of fish and shellfish, you may eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore tuna per week.
- Check local advisories about the safety of fish caught by family and friends in your local lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. If no advice is available, eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) per week of fish you catch from local waters, but don't consume any other fish during that week.
Follow these same recommendations when feeding fish and shellfish to your young child, but serve smaller portions.

I stopped eating tuna when I saw a doctor on a talk show saying "If it is not good for pregnant women and children why would it be good for you?" And I really like tuna sandwichs or casseroles. Just thought it made sense.
Sure I would probably eat it if I was over someones house for lunch. But I no longer buy it. I have switched over to canned salmon and maceral.
Guess I won't be eating anymore macarel anymore.

Darn, and the Albacore is my favorite
I don't usually have more than a can a week but according to the chart I should be waiting 12 days?! I knew about the mercury in it, but I always thought that you shouldn't eat more than a couple cans a week...Thanks for the info

I had heard about the mercury awhile back too. I will still buy it once in awhile.....depending on the price. Yeah, it was the pits that the albacore is the worst as that is the one I liked better.
The canned salmon is sooooooooooo salty. I tried that and almost couldn't finish the can. And I had mixed it up too.........like I would with tuna.
What do you do with yours? Does it cut the salt?

Thanks for the info. I'll still eat it and glad to see the cheaper chunk light isn't as "bad" as the albacore.
Moderation in most things is my usual mantra.

DH loves tuna. He has it at least once a week. We buy the light...I am still going to keep it in the house, because we are not dead yet...but I don't even know what happens to you if you eat to much?

We don't eat that much but will continue to eat the way we've always done. I have a ton but we only eat maybe every couple of months. At that time we eat all we want and we're done until the next time.
