Default Why do they call it a mandolin slicer?

This is a trivial question.....I've seen a few of these slicers in the seed catalogs that have started coming in the mail. Does anyone know why it's called a "mandolin" slicer? I googled it without success.

    Thanks!

I hope the link helps. I can't vouch for accuracy.

Now we know. I bought one of these for Dd for Christmas and was so close to getting the special cut reistant gloves (washable) to go with it. I really worry about her cutting her hand on it. I told her she had to promise me she'd take her time and really be aware of what she was doing as she uses it. Ya I'm still being motherly...those things are dangerous!

The last time I used mine, I didn't take my time...took some skin off one of my knuckles...slowed down and used the "grabber" thing.........

Perhaps the original used wires to cut...much like a cheese slicer.
