Daisy - I tried drinking powdered milk straight up and
I made it the night before to let it sit overnight and do its thing and its just not for me especially when drinking straight. There's something about real milk that can't be duplicated. Yet I looooooove coffeemate powder when I indulge
I have purchased a small bag to keep on hand 'just in case' and for baking - its Carnation brand and its skim or fat free which I thought would work well b/c I only drink skim milk - boy was I wrong! I did buy the store brand from Food Basics - Selection (?) I think its called but have yet to crack that open. I know No Frills sells a huge bag - think pillow size - and it was priced really well but have not tried that brand.
I do use the powdered milk for baking where recipes call for milk. I just whip it up 1/2 hr before I'm ready to bake and the baked goods don't taste any different.
As for trying it in coffee/tea - I've never thought of that plus I like how another posted said it doesn't dilute your drink. I have added it to hot chocolate and noticed the taste was still there but not as in your face as straight powdered milk.
Good luck on your adventures with powdered milk - let us know your findings and how it turns out

I was in the store buying milk yesterday (didn't have time to run all the way out to TJ for the 2.99$ stuff) and I saw that the cheapest gallon of whole milk was $3.69.
But they had 1/2 gallons of the same brand whole milk for 1.49. Well....12 gallon + 1/2 gallon = 1 gallon. 1.49+1.49=2.98 71 cents in my pocket for buying 1/2 gallons.

Amazing the price differences - milk here (near Chicago) has been 2.49 to 2.69 most of the time - regular price at Aldi's, sale at other stores, but pretty regularly available. I don't use that much milk, so it is not as much of a concern to me as it might be for other families.
