Make-a-mix recipes
I just imported a bunch of Make-a-mix recipes from a Yahoo forum into my Mastercook software. They look fabulous, time saving and money saving. Does anyone else use these recipes? I'm beginning with some of the rice mixes, and the muffin mix, since those seem so easy to use with ingredients that I have on hand.

I would like to get some more of these to add to my recipe file. I have read about them but don't really have any recipes. I should search some out.

Make-a-mix recipe is making up your own shake and bake mixture for chicken, instead of paying the outlandish prices in the stores.
Now for your other question I'm only guessing here because I don't have it. But I would guess MasterCook is a piece of software for your computer (a CD program) It sounds like you can download recipes off the internet directly into the program to save them.

Yes, Mastercook is a software program. It's an inexpensive program and it's fantastic. I have downloaded tons of recipes. There is a yahoo group called mastercookcategories, that I've gotten a lot of recipes from, especially their archives. The make-a-mix is so much more than shake and bake. It has lots and lots of mix recipes and then recipes that you use with those mixes.
Here is an example of a soup mix. You mix this up, store it in your pantry, and it's ready whenever you want to have soup. I've also included a rice recipe.

I don't have Mastercook.... I too would be interested in learning more.
Can you type in your own recipes to the program as well? I searched for a program to enter my recipes into and then print them out when needed and couldn't find a good one. Or even one that prints onto 3x5 cards.Sherry

Mastercook used to be sold by Sierra. My version is from them. You can find the old Sierra versions for about $9.00 in bargain bins at software stores. You can also look on Ebay and half.com. The newest version (6.2) is put out by Valusoft. It's about $22, but it has, I believe, 9 Betty Crocker Cookbooks included! Most of the recipes from the older Sierra versions can be downloaded from the web.
Yes, you can enter your own recipes. It has a nice printing feature, with different size options for recipe cards. Also, something thats really nice is that you can print out your own cookbook. I plan on putting all of my husband's mothers and grandmothers recipes in it and printing off a cookbook for his sister.

make-a-mix
Good morning Pam. I used Make-A-Mix recipes extensively when my children were growing up. I stumbled across a cookbook in a local drug strore years ago, bought it, tried a few of the mixes, and ran back to the drug store to buy any different make-a-mix cookbooks I could find. There was only one (entitled "More Make-A-Mix"). Those are the only two I could ever find.
I LOVED using those recipes and both cookbooks are well worn. I've tried many of the "master mixes" but my favorites are Quick Mix (try the Turnover Fried Pies), Braised Beef Cube Mix (slow cooker works great for this), Mexican Meat Mix (the Chimichangas are better than any I've had in a restaurant), Brownie Mix (again, never had better-rich and chewy), and my children were crazy about the Fruit Slush Mix. I could go on and on, but give them a try. You will be glad you did. Sandy

Sandy, I agree 100% !! I used these cookbooks for years. My very favorites, not to be confused with my favorites were the cookies recipes in the More Make A Mix book. You mix the dough up completely, then shape into rolls (like the Pillsbury dough logs you buy) wrap and freeze. I wrote the type, temp. to bake at and the length of bake time in Sharpie Pen on the outer wrap. I always had a quick snack in the freezer. My DD's could bake up a batch too, without leaving my kitchen in a disaster.
I made lots of the meat mixes thru the years also!! I would recommend these books anyone. I learned the hard way not to loan mine out.
I had to replace my More Make A Mix book 2 times. Must be a good book!!!
