Question How much shrimp should I buy for 12 adults?

I am offering shrimp cocktail for one of my appetizers at my annual Christmas Eve party. There will be 12 adults eating it...anyone have an approximate lb. to recommend?

    TIA!

How many other appetizers are you having? And what are they? Let me look around, I will try to find what the "experts" recommend.

I am having a mostly appetizer party, and this is what I have on the menu so far:

    shrimp cocktail
    buffalo wings
    bread bowl with dip
    chips and onion dip
    homemade Chex party mix
zucchini and mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers
    cheese and crackers/fruit
    Veggie tray
    Stuffed mushrooms
    Sausage biscuits
    Salad

Additionally, my FIL is **insisting** that he bring a ham or roast

And we will have many sweets as well:
    Fudge
    Rice Krispies treats
Cream puffs, strawberry Napoleons, mini eclairs
    Cheesecake
    7 Layer Bars
    Apple Pie
    Blueberry Pie
    Pralines
    Peanut butter kiss cookies

Phew, I think that's it! LOL I'm sure I'm forgetting some other goodie that I wanted to put out for everyone.

Default Okay, here is what I found...

    http://www.shaboomskitchen.com/h-crowd.html

They recommend 3/4 ounce per person or 9 pounds.

    http://www.weberbbq.com/Public_weber...k/portions.asp

They recommend 6-8 ounces per person.

I would say since you are having other appetizers you should go for 8 ounces per person. If you are having A LOT of other appetizers (like 4 or more) I would go with 6 ounces per person. I hope this helps.

Wow! Can I come too? lol

I would go with 6 oz per person or 4.5 lbs. This might acually be too much, but better safe than sorry. You can always freeze the leftovers.

    Have fun!

I would go with at least 5 lbs of shrimp--depending on the size of the serving tray/dish you want to use. Really fresh shrimp is always a crowd pleaser, looks nice on the table too. I use my left-overs the next day for a really quick pasta dish with just a little fresh garlic, olive oil and parsley. Enjoy the party.
