    Exclamation powdered milk

I use powdered milk for many things.

    - I dilute 2% milk with 1/2 powdered milk and at long as it is cold, the kids drink it without even knowing the difference.
    - I use powdered milk to do all my baking if it requires milk - much cheaper.
    - Dh uses powdered milk in his tea
    - When making bread, I use powdered milk also, but make it just a wee bit stronger
    - I use it in making pancakes

Do you use powdered milk at all?

I use it to make clam chowder. I save the water I boil the potatoes in and use it to mix the powder in with. It works very well. I use it to make mac and cheese too. It makes great pudding! I also use it in baking.

    Yes, I use it.

Another great source for using it is JoAnna Lund's cookbooks (Healthy Exchanges line of cookbooks). She uses dry milk powder in a good majority of her recipes.

    Default powdered milk question

We are very very low in the pantry and fridge till Monday, payday. We have powdered milk. Does it taste the same as milk...will the kids notice? And, can I use it in cooking the same as regular milk?

Kids over 4-5 most likley will notice but maybe if you have some flavoring it might help, and if you drink skim they might not notice as much. In cooking it works just fine, I don't think I would try any fancy sause but just regular stuff it works great, even baking.

If you have some milk now I would start blending the two to the transition isn't so big.

I notice and can stand it in cereal and cooking but not to just strait out drink, but I am kind of picky.

I agree. Start mixing it now so it won't be such a big change. I've found that making sure it is really cold and well blended (make it the night before) helps some. They probably won't notice it on cereal or in cooking (like for mac & cheese), especially if you pour it into the old milk jug!

ditto. Chocolate milk anyone? treats for the kids, a bit of sugar and cocoa powder which is normally awful from a nutrition stand point but may get the powdered milk across without comment and even make it a desirable event.

Lol they may really enjoy the "treat".

I can't stand the smell of it. My kids would notice right away. I have used it in the past with the little one though when I ran out of milk when he was still drinking out of a bottle. I think that he would notice now and I would never be able to pass it off to them. Some kids will not notice I am sure. Good luck with it.

We use powdered milk on a regular basis around here. Do mix it the night before and serve it really cold. Flavoring it would be good if your kids are picky drinkers . I use it in cooking all the time and my family is fine with it.

I would not hesitate to use it in cooking, but drink it? No way. It would not be well received here. We drink about two and a half gallons of 1% milk every week at our house. We have had many weeks of very skinny grocery budgets here. I know what it is like to not have a dollar until payday. I would probably try to get milk into my kids by cooking hot cereal, like malt o meal or oatmeal with the powdered milk. We would drink juice or water. Hot cocoa made with powdered milk would be fine. Good luck!

Thumbs up I made powdered skim milk...and...

I had a glass after a few hours it was in the fridge and it was very cold...AND I liked it! I didn't tell my boys and Patrick and Daniel had a glass and said nothing! They just drank it. I wasn't planning on using it for drinking--just for recipes. I had made muffins yesterday and I had some left...

Anyways...I have decided to make some all the time for myself and I decided to make half 2% and half powdered skim milk for the boys. I am so happy because it will save us alot of money, since powdered milk is much cheaper!

I had always wanted to try but was worried that they would hate it and now they just drank some and it wasn't even my intention...

I tried Powdered milk the other day too, the kids haven't said anything. Well, knock wood, they haven't said anything SO FAR. I made omeletts last night with it and DH didn't notice. SO I might be cutting our milk with powdered milk from now on!

When the budget allows taste test different varieties of powdered milk. Morning Moo is a pretty good, widely available brand. As others said, add a touch of vanilla to make it taste a little better.

Most people don't know this but powdered milk comes in many varieties. There is whole milk, 2% and non-fat. Most people buy non-fat and, understandably, dislike the stuff.

Not only can you cook with powdered milk like regular, there are MANY interesting recipes that call for just powdered milk. Did you know you can make cheese and whipped cream with powdered milk? There's a book with these recipes. I'll try to find a link for you.
