Hot Mama Bread & fond memories
Today, I'm eating a totally unhealthy lunch, and I'm looking forward to it.
DD and I will be splitting a "hot mama bread", which is basically a rectangular garlic cheese bread that you eat dipped in pizza sauce. They come in cheese, pepperoni, garlic, etc.
For me, it takes me back to college-- these come from Toledo, Ohio, which is very close to where I went to school (Bowling Green). We used to eat Hot Mama bread in the dorms & if I had enough $$ left on my food card I'd get one at the little store on campus.

When I saw this in the freezer section at Meijer the other night, I HAD to have one. I haven't had one in a quite a while. My husband doesn't get the "big deal", nor does he like the bread, but, I know I'll enjoy it.
The box says " WARNING: Cooking Hot Mama Breads with your windows open may cause neighbors or random people to show up unexpectedly."
It's in the oven baking right now.
There are other foods that bring instant memories... my mom's fried chicken, my grandma's cookies, etc. Those are probably pretty common- I'd bet that everyone has some memories associated with family recipes. This "junk food" meal of Hot Mama Bread... with a Mountain Dew, of course... takes me straight back into a dorm room, though.
Do you have some weird non-family food that takes you back in time?

Homemade macaroni and cheese takes me back to university for sure! My roommate and I learned how to make it, and it's SO much better than the boxed stuff (plus not really that much more expensive). We used to make it about once a week.
Chinese food from the Big Rock Inn in Okotoks, Alberta takes me right back to high school. Whenever my boyfriend and I went out to dinner, it was there. It still tastes the same to this day, and I be sure to include it as one of our meals out whenever my husband and I go to visit my family in Okotoks.

For me it's homemade beanie-weanies with lots of brown sugar and onions eaten with a bread and butter sandwich, fried eggs and potatoes, cottage cheese eaten with sour cream & onion potato chips, a Snicker bar eaten with BBQ chips and a Tab, Taco Bell and Egg McMuffins, LOL. Funny though, now I can't stomach anything from McDonalds, but I still love Taco Bell and the other weird foods I lived on back then.
LOL, my kids and grandkids love the beanie-weanies now.

Anything my mom cooks especially her spaghetti sauce. The smell of Thanksgiving turkey and dressing.

Peanut butter and honey on homemade white bread. When I was a child in school, we had a small rural school and all the food was homemade and delicious. They always had bowls on the tables with peanut butter mixed with honey and plates of homemade white bread to spead it on. It is a comfort food and is sooooo good.
