    Default Cream of Mushroom Soup for around 25 cents a can!

    We use a fair amount of the cream soups, so I invented my own way of making Cream of Mushroom soup.

    I chopped 1 lb of Fresh mushrooms in the food processer (this cost 1.49 at Aldi's

    I added 3 sticks of Margarine (1.77)
    4 cloves fresh garlic pressed (15 cents?)
    1 Tablespoon or so of Onion Salt (21 cents aprox)

    I cooked this a little and added 36 Tablespoons of Flour. I divided this mixture into ice cube trays and froze. Then later, I will finish popping them out and putting them in Ziploc bags and freezing them. To make close to one can of condensed cream of mushroom soup, all I have to do is pull out out 2 large cubes and 1 small cube and whisk in 1 cup of milk OR my frugal saved Veggie broth (free) and heat till hot and thick!

    Scince most of my milk is also free from WIC, this equals about 23-25 cents a can. The Aldi Cream Mushroom soup is 49 Cents a can! This recipe makes the equivlent of 12 cans of Condensed Cream soup!

    I can make the condensed cream of tomato soup (I use this for recipes) for around 10 cents+ per can by making it up and freezing it! If I use WIC V8 Juice OR tomato juice!

    I plan to try Cream of Chicken soup with my homemade broth and onion salt, flour, and garlic!

    I am saving half as much OR more by not buying all that at Aldis because I do use cream soups to cook easy casseroles with.

    Great idea - if you can get the ingredients inexpensively. one pound of mushrooms on sale here is $5.00.

    That sounds good. I also wanted to suggest this handy mix for cream of soups - you can add mushrooms, celery, other things based on what you need. I think powdered milk is generally one of the things you can get on WIC.

    Cream Soup Mix (Replacement for Cream of ___ Soups) Substitute

    Ingredients

    o 1 cup powdered milk
    o 3/4 cup cornstarch
    o 1/4 cup instant bouillon granules
    o 2 tablespoons dried onion flakes
    o 1 teaspoon basil
    o 1 teaspoon thyme
    o 1/2 teaspoon pepper

    Directions

    1. Mix all the ingredients together.
    2. Store in an airtight container.
    3. For the equivalent of 1 can of cream soup, mix 1/3 cup of dry mix with 1 1/4 cups of cold water. Cook in sauce pan until thick.
    4. Entire recipe makes the equivalent of nine cans of cream soup.

    Think I may try both recipes. I don't often use cream soups so always need to go out when the need arises. I've been wanting to get some dry milk but it comes in such a big box. This will be another use for some of it. Who knows,I may use it up faster than thought.
