I come from a family where I am the oldest at 38 and the youngest is 10. My kids range in age from 6-17 so we have aunts and uncles younger than nephews and nieces. I am close to my siblings, but more like an "aunt" to the younger ones. My children are more like cousins to their aunts and uncles too. It works out fine. My only regret is that my kids have kind of a strange relationship with their grandparents as they are still so busy parenting their children that they don't have a lot of time to grandparent in the most traditional sense of the word, but there is a lot of great too.
My kids have 11 years from youngest to oldest and all have at least 3 years in between. I can see where it would be nice to have kids close together so that they would play and so that they would all be in the same "place" at the same time. But there is good to having them spaced out too- they still find things to do together. I am able to give them a lot of individual attention for who they are- they don't get grouped at all. I think no matter what you choose it'll all be fine. We are contemplating another too- so I do hear ya.

My dil has has three sons 27, 21 & 7. The 7 yr old is my son's son. Other two are from first marriage...the 27 yr old has two children 3 yrs & 3 mths. So my son was a grandpa at 35 and my grandson was a uncle at 4 yrs old....dil is 9 yrs older then my son. I do think my dil has no patience being 47 with 7 yr old..but I keep my mouth shut...Older boys love the 7 yr old but they don't see him that often.

My kids are nearly 4 years apart and that felt to long but I had a serious cardiac issue that had to be addressed. I was monitored bi weekly by a cardiologist throughout my second pregnancy . The doctors were less then thrilled when I got pregnant the second time but we so desperetly wanted a second child. My tubes were tied when my second was born (c section) my Cardiac condition was corrected 7 years later and I have often regretted the tubal now knowing I would have loved a third child but at the time being able to physically carry a baby again seemed impossible. On another note I had friend who had a brother older then my parents and sisters that graduated from high school with my parents and a nephew older then her. She was very close to her nephew and neice of the same age and had very little relationship with her older siblings. I think its a very personal choice and you should do what your heart tells you. If you have the means to take care of another child and you want one then have one. All children are blessings.

My sister and I are 7 years apart. We spent a decent amount of time together in her younger years, but as I pushed into high school, we moved apart. However, I was still the ideal "older brother", looking out for her, helping her where needed, giving her advice, being cool to her friends. She said she really appreciated me when she was in high school, and we hung out again once she got into college. Now, we're good friends, and I wished we lived closer together.

I have 2 children and they are 6 1/2 years apart in age.
I have 5 sisters, 3 older and 1 younger. My older sisters are 15, 13 and 5 years older than me. My youngest sister and I are only 2 years apart in age.
I became an Aunt at 5 and I am now a Great Great Aunt, my oldest niece became a Grandma earlier in the year. (I'm 49)

I have siblings that are 17, 15, 13, 10, and 7 years older than I am. I also have one that is 3 years younger than I am.
From the time I was about 22, I have been closest with my eldest brother who is 17 years older than I. We never even lived together in my recollection!
