Question laundry cold water wash question

Just starting to wash in cold water. I have a question.

Can you safely put light load and dark load clothes in the same load if washing in cold water?

Example jeans and dark dress pants and a white shirt all in the same load.

I wash in cold water, but I still wash darks and whites separate on the off chance that something will fade or stain the whites. I wash light colors with whites with no problem.

Never would I put a white shirt in with jeans..I would think even in cold h20, it would dull the white shirt. But, I've never tried it. I wash in cold..but still separate clothes..from habit-I'm sure.

Maybe it's cos' I put some borax in the wash, but I don't get a dull or faded look... I've had to break a few habits when it comes to laundry, and haven't regretted it at all..

No one in my family has become ill because towels or sheets haven't been washed in warm or hot.
