Even though it's not a homemade product 409 is fabulous for removing so many different stains in laundry. If you spray and let it sit for awhile it will removal most stains and is great on oily or grease stains.

Grease carpet stains can be removed with a mixture of gasoline and starch. You make a pulp of them and put it on the stain. After a while gasoline will evaporate and then you may remove the starch using dry brush. Keep in mind that such stain treatment can be applied only to carpets made of natural materials. Never apply gasoline to synthetic carpets.

All I can say is oxi-clean. I just cleaned the seats of three chairs. I covered the seats in an off-white fabric years ago. They are all clean now and look great.

I use shaving cream on light colored carpets. The creamy kind that I can get at the dollar store. This worked great before we owned a home and were renting apartments. You know how that beige carpet always had mysterious stains that would appear after living there a few months? Squirt a little shaving cream on them and dab/blot them with a damp rag. Wait until dry and then vacuum the spot. You may have to treat it two or three times, but it works.
I got soaked in, dried red soda out of white carpet and coffee out of beige carpet.~Jessica
