I like older historical storylines like in the books
Nicholas and Alexandria (about Anastasia)
The Rape of NanKing (about the treatment of the citiczens of NanKing during the war)
The Tunnels of Cuchi(sp) about the tunnels of the VietCong

Do a search on ebay under non-fictional historical books you will find tons of them and some great deals.
" May we never let the things we can’t have or don’t have or shouldn’t have spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. As we value our happiness, let us not forget it. One of the greatest lessons in life is learning to be happy without the things we cannot or should not have."

A World Lit Only by Fire by William Manchester about how much the world changed during Magellan's circumnavigation around the world. It is a great read about a time of incredible upheaval.

The Canteen Spirit!!! It's about the North Platte Canteen that was run during World War 2 just a couple blocks down the street from where I live, and the over 6 million soldiers that passed through there. My grandmother volunteered when she was in Jr. High and my grandfather passed through it twice around 1945 when he was drafted into the army after high school. There's also a PBS show about it!

That Dark & Bloody River by Allan Eckert. It chronicles the history of the Ohio River Valley.

I agree with John Adams. Another one that is interesting is The Children's Blizzard by David Laskin.

With hurricane season upon us, have you read Isaac's Storm? I don't remember the author. It's about the terrible Galveston hurricane around the turn of the century.
