I usually push through. I've got few books on my shelves I never finished reading. Unless it's a text book.

I have to know how things end, I guess, even if I think the story sucks. It took me 2.5 seasons to finally make myself stop watching "Heroes" cause I was hating it so much.If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

It depends.
If I think the book may get better at some point, then I'll continue.
Otherwise, it goes back into the library bag and out comes another.

When I was in school I was a trooper, would slog through to the end. No more. I don't even give them 50 pages. If it doesn't interest me at all in the first 25 or so, that's it. I've got better things to do with my time than bore myself.
At this point in my life I own very few books, an addiction it took a long time to get over. I only buy books I know I like and anticipate rereading often. There aren't so many of those out there. So I don't have to feel like I'm wasting hard earned money if I abandon a book.Donna

I will finish reading it but do some major skimming sometimes skipping whole pages. I think I just have to know how things end.

I don't finish a book if I don't like it, I give it somewhere around 35 - 50 pages, depends on how quick of a read it is. Then, I move on. Not every book is for me, I'm okay with that. I use the library, so, it doesn't cost anything to look or borrow.

If I bought the book and am not getting into it I'll put it away and try again another time. If the stinker is a library book it just goes back in the bag to be returned.

Not anymore, but I used to make myself finish, and I have read some truly awful books.
If for some reason, I don't get into the book, I lay it down, and move on. Life is too short and there are too many other books to be bogged down with a stinker.

I guess what others tell me about the book ahead of time will affect my decision. I rarely buy a book w/o a recommendation or experience with the author. I had little interest in Harry Potter, just because it was such a Fad, but I was told that it was worth pushing thru books 1 and 2 because 3 got better. I did, and book 2 was REALLY a push (ugh, dues ex machina to the max) but then with book 3 the series had me.
Other times, if the book doesn't impress me, I may finish it, but I don't remember it - not the title, not the plot - only maybe one or two little things that later in life bug me as I think, "Oh what was that awful book that was in???"If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

I'm in with the "50 pages into it" crowd. If it's a genre that usually does interest me quite a bit I will just put it back on the shelf and try again in a few months, sometimes it just isn't the right time for certain books. I've done this many times and have enjoyed the book and read it all the way through the second time I tried. On the other hand, sometimes I just can't get into a book no matter what, if that happens I will just donate the book back to the library for their Friends of the Library sales since that's usually where I buy most of my books from.

I have to finish it once its started, same with movies, projects and games. It seems to be a compulsion with me.

I'll give it a couple tries then move on. Last book that many think is such a great book & I just could not get into was One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I tried, I really did but nope, not again.

A book has to be REALLY bad for me to give up on it. It has happened a few times. Mostly if they are bad, I just won't ever get that author again.
