    Thumbs down Saw V

I was bored yesterday so I thought I would watch a movie. I always hear people raving about the "Saw" movie series, but I had never seen any of the movies. So, I decided to watch "Saw V". BIG MISTAKE! I think I lasted all of 5 minutes before turning it off. Gross!

I guess my question is, why do people watch this kind of stuff? What good can come from it? I mean, I knew that the movie was supposed to be scary, but I had no idea about all the blood and gore. EWWWWW!

I hate scary movies. Life is scary enough. :ceek1:

When I was in college I took a class called Death, Dying and Bereavement. In one of the first classes we discussed the place that gory/scary movies have in society. Watching movies like this is a way of exploring and confronting the mystery of death to some. Especially since these movies are aimed at teenagers and young adults -- that last passionate flare up of perceived invincibility before we actually being to believe in our own mortality. Confronting this fake mortality is a way to vicariously embrace the idea of one's own mortality without taking it head on to a lot of people. Especially outlandish and fantastic, unrealistic -- even humorous -- deaths. It's a commentary on the human condition. Watching gory movies is a lot more "comfortable" than outwardly accepting the inevitable existence of one's own death. I do believe these movies, this storytelling, has a valid place in the developmental psychology of the young adult and we have most likely been doing things like this for thousands of years, telling beefed up stories about death in order to confront the honestly more simple yet more terrifying reality.

...and sometimes it is just flat out fun to be grossed out.

I liked Saw, and thought the idea behind it was pretty creative, but thought the sequels got progressively worse. I haven't seen Saw V. I think I stopped at III.

I've been a fan of horror and sci-fi novels and movies since I was big enough to turn the t.v. on by myself! My sister can't watch them at all. I'm totally in touch with my own mortality, to the point of being an atheist, so I'm not really sure what the draw to horror is. Maybe I'm just an adrenaline junkie.

(P.S. If you thought Saw was gory, check out Hostel!)

I too, Love horror movies...Good ones!!!
I watched the first saw and did not like the pointless gore! However because people have been raving about them I wonder about trying the others! Of course it is not a "deep" curiosoty as I have not bothered to rent them to watch in 2 years of "wondering"!!!

I love a good horror film, one that has a good story line and not just pointless gore!

I enjoy the movies. Not so much about the blood and gore, but because I love the concept behind it (especially the first one).

Blood and gore movies bore me. Movies and TV shows and books which explore the darker sides of human nature, on the other hand, enthrall me.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Thank goodness I'm not the only one. It's a movie, it's fake, it's repetitive, thus boring. I find reality, especially the minds of serial killers vastly more fascinating and frightening.

While I don't mind blood and gore, it's the ones involving the human psyche that really interest me. One of the scariest movies that I ever saw was Frailty and that wasn't really blood and gore at all.

I am 36 and in my younger days, I enjoyed the Freddie Kruger/Jason type movies. They were completely fake and would never happen. The problem I have with this new genre-Saw, Tourista, Hostel, is that you could actually envision some sicko doing this crap somewhere. That makes it not so much fun for me anymore.

I like good horror flicks. I thought Saw was a great mind-twisted thriller. I stopped watching after the third one because I didn't think they were as good. Hostel freaked me out! mainly because when my son was a year old my then hubby and I backpacked across Europe and the situations in Hostel were the same we experienced (help from other people, leading them to different spots). When I look back on our trip now...I am glad we came back alive! .... I enjoy sitting back and watching a good scary flick! (just not hostel)

exactly! sometimes when i sit down and watch a movie, i want one i dont have to think about. i just want to sit there and veg for a few hours and have fun watching it. and most horror movies really dont require much thinking. i thought the twist in the first one was quite good, i haven't seen 4 or 5 yet tho. haute tension had a pretty good twist.... well i wasn't expecting it anyway!

I love to watch horror mobies but not the kind that focus on just killing and blood and guts. I never liked the Friday the 13th or Halloween movies but love movies that have twists and surprises. I love suspense.
