Will anyone have a job when this is over?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090126/ap_on_bi_ge/economy
It seems like every time I pop on Yahoo or CNN it is more layoffs, more companies shutting down, etc....
You begin to wonder who will have a job (if anyone....)Frugalista Mama to DD 12 & DS 8

I thought I was handling the roller coaster ride pretty well until today. When I saw the news this morning I started to get a little panicky.

I try not to get caught up in the negative news we are subjected to each day. I ask myself if anything in my life has changed since yesterday. It is hard but you must not let it get to you. If this whole country becomes pessimistic, we will never succeed in getting out of this mess.

I think people are going to have to learn to readjust and possibly look at other lines of work. It's hard now because of the whole credit situation, but once the recession is over and new jobs are created in sustainable lines of work then it'll be better.

Today was the first day that I've spoken with friends, family, or email buddies all over the world that I really heard the panic and worry. Seeing Iceland didn't help any. Wow how scary for their bank to fail. It's like watching dominoes....aaaack

It is pretty scarey but at the same token there are still many jobs out there. If there wasn't, we wouldn't have had to wait an hour and 10 minutes at a Japanese restaurant the other night (someone treated us) and this place is big.

Ugh, I hated to hear this news. So many families hurting right now with more getting the boot. Things are definitely spiraling.

So many jobs are being sent overseas. Many people who are still employed are "under-employed". Who can make ends meet earning $8/hour? Lack of decent jobs will be this country's unraveling.

Quite a few companies are doing very well in this negative turn of the economy. Resist the temptation to succumb to "the sky is falling" thinking - the media focuses on the bad, but many companies that are pillars of the economy today were started during the Depression of 1930.
This is when things change, not end. Adapt and seek opportunity, don't panic. If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

I think that it is easy to get caught up in the news about large layoffs, without realizing that they are not that significant as a percentage of total jobs. There are still, as Greebo mentioned, companies that are doing well and growing. There are still new start-up companies that may well thrive. There are still city/state/federal jobs. Companies are still hiring. So, I think we need to focus on what it takes to keep an existing job or to be one of the people hired into a new one rather than focussing on the fear about whether there are enough jobs. Also, I think ALL of us at the village should give ourselves a congratulatory pat for being aware of at least the concept of trying to marshall our financial resources so as to maximize our satisfaction from them. Do you realize how many people in our society cannot even figure out how to make effective use of coupons that are delivered to their doors for products that they already use? So maybe alot of people have to learn new ways of doing some things, and maybe many of us have to do without things we'd like to have, and probably some people are even truly in serious need - but I think there are always some people in serious need and we often tend to overlook them so maybe those who are will actually benefit from an increased awareness. Let's try to benefit from this as best we can.

Well, it's tough when the sky is falling on you! Our company just doubled the number of people who will be layed off ~ up to 10K now. Sigh.
