    Default Yesterday's Oprah

I watch oprah on occassion and saw someone post about it yesterday and I still missed it!

Then, I got a text message from a friend of mine that a woman we know was on the show!~ I can't believe I missed it! This woman was in the same "moms group" I was in a few years ago!

I watched it yesterday and i couldn't believe how much the first women they profiled spent!! It was nice to see these families reconnect eating dinner at home and playing games and spending time together.

I felt bad for the first woman. It seemed like she saw the light though. I don't think she's alone in thinking things will make her happy. That seems like a common problem, amongst all groups including those who only collect their stuff from secondhand sources. It's not about the amount of money spent all the time, it's about the hoarding too.

I always found the best times as a homeschooling family were when the computer was in the shop being repaired! We don't have cable, so get lousy TV reception. Meant the kids had to be creative about how to spend their time. I often saw an explosion in learning during those times. I'm the only person I know who ever actively prayed for the computer to break down!

I think it was brave of this lady to take her family on TV to do this...especially with her little guy being so resistant. It was a good experience for them no doubt.

I think frugality has gone mainstream. Even Dr. Phil had a frugality show yesterday. The Economides were on!

    Hi,

I only saw the 2nd half of Oprah; but I watched Dr Phil He had a family on just like all of us. They have 3 teen children; all of them had on outfits from the thrift store; they never pay over $30 for a prom dress they soap up with shower water off. If you get Dr Phil on twice a day like I do. I watched it at night. It is usually on 1 week later during the day. The name of the familes book is Americas cheapest family gets you right on the money by Steve Economides.

i watched both Oprah and Dr. Phil too. I could not believe how much stuff Kay Jean had in her stockpile. To me it really seemed like it was overkill for 2 adults and 2 kids to have that much stuff.

I just hope that the families that start being more frugal stay with it. I hope this era is eye-opening for our country and not just a passing phase.

my opinion....a year or two after all this blows over...the majority ( i didn't say ALL) will start to slack up...slowly....get more comfortable....more slacking..... and before you know it...they are back at it again....

i liken this to someone that has health problems....the docs say its time to take care of yourself...you do...at first...then you get more lenient with yourself...then a little more...and before you know it.... you are right where you started....(i know many of these...!)....

times will get better...things will get better...people will go back to their 'lifestyles'....the media won't be beating us up every day with economy doom and gloom (oh sure there will be doom and gloom from them alright...they will just find something else to dismay us with...used to be our health...maybe they will go back to that)....

    face it...it's the 'american way'....

“After the last tree has been cut down, after the last river has been poisoned, after the last fish has been caught.
Only then will you find that money can't be eaten.”

sabrelvssammy I'm glad you said this. I've found myself "slipping" lately. I want to buy a house so every penny is important to me. I really need to give myself a good shake and get back into it.

    Thanks for the wakeup call!
