SciFi to become SyFy - to shed "geeky" image
http://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/03/s...to_shed_ge.php
What a bunch of ydyots...If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

eh...
They are going to change the name... to be less geeky... um, okay.
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,”
They want more females? More 'non-basement dwellers'? ... how about starting with ditching wrestling!!!Last edited by Lady_V; 03-17-2009 at 03:09 PM.

OK, so now I am going to watch it because the name although pronounced the same is spelled different?

As a card carrying SciFi geek (with the Star Trek costume to prove it...), I have to say that that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
If they go through with it I'm totally going to start calling it Siffy.
NancyI may not be where I need to be, but thank God I'm not where I used to be.

I read in an article (not sure if it's included in the link above as I didn't read it) that they were having trouble with licensing issues with the "SciFi" name due to it be a genre not a unique name and they think SyFy will help. Still seems like shaky logic, but slightly more logical.

That really sounds stupid. Maybe when I was 12 I might have cared that people would have considered me a geek or a nerd. Now...I am proud of who I am.
Plus, I think changing the name, even a bit, will confuse some people (my parents for one)

I heard the licensing story too. Honestly, they should have just said, "We can't trademark SciFi, so we're changing to SyFy, and embracing our geekness even more."

I am not a science fiction buff at all, but I don't even think I would want to watch a tv station called SyFy... Sounds too corny. At least when it is SciFi I understand the channel, SyFy-looks silly.

I think from now on I'm pronouncing it Siffy.

With the logic that the SciFi (Siffy) Channel is using, pretty soon we'll be seeing -
The Fud Network
The Golph Channel
Howm and Gardin
The Histree Channel
Lyfetyme
I may not be where I need to be, but thank God I'm not where I used to be.
