Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael series. Set in a 12th century England monastery, and rich in the history of that time.
Agatha Chrisite's Miss Marple is THE amateur sleuth.
I second the "Cat Who" series. Especially if you can get an unabridged audio read by George Guidall.

My hubby and I both enjoy the Stone Barrington series by Stuart Woods

And I don't know if two books qualifies for a series quite yet, but Chelsea Cain's Heartsick and Sweetheart were excellent!-Suzanne
