How different do you think those two were from, oh, Daryl and Shane?

You cannot with certainty say what the entire group stands for because of what two members did.
but how many of the group were involved in the raping? I think the big message here, and what makes this show so awesome is that you don't really know WHAT you would do in this situation.

Hang on - lets apply a little consistency to our judgment here.
How do you even know there was a raping?

If Randall is loyal to this oh so evil group then his word isn't exactly trustworthy.

What we *know* is that the group has more members, and that at least some of the members are willing to do anything to secure safety. Beyond that its all speculation and the statements of a hostage being tortured.

I don't think they can possibly release him and just -hope- things go rosey and he won't bring a gang savages back to the farm because they showed 'humanity'. I feel entirely confident basing the group's activities on the behavior of the first two they encoutered in the bar, the actions of the group looking for them, and the prisoner's words. After what we've seen first hand of some of the group's actions, I hesistate to think the rape story is a lie, though I wonder if his claim he didn't participate is. If it we my/my group's life on the line, I wouldn't make excuses or play the 'what if' game. The guy can't be trusted, to set him free when he knows the farm's location and resources is to put everyone's life on the line. They alreadty have enough of that day to day! Again a crying shame their original plan to release him far away went awry!

You're inserting a straw man, khaski. I never said "just release him".

I'm not meaning to put words into your mouth, Greebo. It seems though to be the debate- kill him or release him...at least as I saw it, the group did not go far into what their other options might be- it was touched upon to possiby assign folks to supervise him, and that idea was tossed aside (as well it should be). I have not seen anyone here suggest other possibilities- it seems obvious he can't be kept captive til the end of time (I am thinking the story line will force this issue shortly one way or another).

I think the debate was more straight forward - "kill him or not".

If they release the guy, he can lead the other group back to the farm, especially after Darryl beat on him pretty badly and they threatened to kill him on more than one occasion.

If they kill the guy, the story stagnates and they're stuck at the farm (and for reasons that people may not have read the novel, I cannot elaborate on what may happen here).

Sure, it's a moral decision but it's also one about survival. Damn or be damned, something big will force them to choose.

We all will never know what the group's right choice would and should be because we're not in a post-apocalyptic state. It's easier to know what to do when you're been one to do it before. When SHTF, people will do anything they can to protect the ones they love.

It's true, it's all speculation until the zombies come!!!! I'm on the 'kill him' side for this one! Side note- if you haven't heard of it, google 'zombie 5k' to see if there's one near you....you can register to be a runner who must try to avoid the zombies during the race, you can be a fast zombie, or slow zombie, or just a spectator...my friends and I are considering going to watch the Boston race, just for kicks!

they want to stay on the farm it is safe and comfortable...
they can't stay....there is going to be other people..it is scary ....

Keep the stranger and let him become the sin eater of the group. May come in handy for future guilt free killings.

I am beyond sad he's gone, and now we know- dead folks come back, infected or not. Had a feeling Shane would try to off Rick on their little outing- why Laurie was so stupid as to say things to wind him up and give him hope I'll never understand. And now the horde's coming- but I don't understand where they all came from? Was it a wandering horde like on the highway?

There was buildup to it - the discussion about how the mud was drying up was saying that walkers could reach the farm more easily. So they were in the area and then heard Shane's gunshot when Rick stabbed him.
