Who follows Oprah's book club and if so, what
Book of her club would you recommend?
I've picked up reading again and so enjoy it, but there are so many books I just won't read. If you follow her book club, is there one book that you would say is a good read? If so, did you read it and what are your thoughts on the book?

The Pilots Wife. This book is very interesting and a great suspense.
I am trying to wade through Vinegar Hill but I am having a hard time. Those are the only ones ?I've read.

I was very disappointed when she decided to discontinue her book club. I read most of the books for a few years. They were all pretty good.

I really liked the book Midwives (can't remember the author). I have read several of Oprah's picks, but I just finished a 13 hr shift and for the life of me, I can't remember the names of the books. I'll try again tomorrow. (but Midwives was GOOD)

I've read several of her books and I can't remember one name of any of them. I can see what the cover's look like but that isn't going to help you too much. When I get home I can give you that info. I really like Anita Shrieve - she has been one of her books - great author.

Don't read 'A Fine Balance'! The ending is terrible and doesn't make any sense. I was very disapointed in that book. 'The Pilot's Wife' was really good as was 'Vinegar Hill'.

Okay I did a little research and found (I think) all of her selections. I will list the ones I've read and which I would recommend... the rest are there in case anyone wants to read any (so you know what to look up at that library!)...I know I will now that I have the list!
What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day-Pearl Cleage
I liked this one (can't remember too many details, but it was a quick read if I can remember)
Ellen Foster- Kaye Gibbons
Good, about a poor orphan girl
Midwives-Chris A. Bohjalian
this is the one I listed before, good book! (It's about a midwife on trial for manslaughter in a home birth where the woman died but the baby lived)
Where the Heart Is-Billie Letts
LOVED this one, this is the one where the girl has the baby in the Walmart...it was made into a movie too. It was touching and poignant and funny. I read another book by Billie Letts called "The Honk and Holler Opening Soon" because I like Where the Heart is so much and I liked it too.
She's Come Undone-Wally Lamb
LOVED this one too. Written by a man, obviously, but it is the story of an overweight GIRL dealing with difficult issues...wonderful book.
I know this much is true-Wally Lamb
This is a long one, but good. It is about twins, one who is "normal" and the other is paranoid schizophrenic who (I think) cuts his hand off? and the brother is dealing with all this, while his life is falling apart.
Tara Road-Maeve Binchy
Good. About unlikely friendships
Black & Blue-Anna Quindlin
Good. About spousal abuse..very powerful story. A woman who has been beaten by her husband for years finally leaves with her son and must make a new life for herself
The Bluest Eye-Toni Morrison
Powerful short novel. About an 11 year old black girl who wishes to have blond hair and blue eyes...she is raped and impregnated by her father...so she can esape what her life really is
White Oleander-Janet Fitch
Great book, I identified with the character. This was made into a movie with Michelle Pfeiffer last year. It's about a girl whose mother goes to jail for murder and she has to go from foster family to foster family while her mother manipulates her from jail.
House of Sand and Fog-Andre Dubus III
This one was good...it is about an iranian man who is trying to keep up with the "joneses" and ends up in financial trouble...he buys a house on auction, but the owner, an alcoholic woman wants it back, so they end up fighting over it and it becomes a nightmare....
