What are your thoughts on Leah's feelings toward Sadie, could you have kept the secret that Leah was asked to keep?
Yes, I could have kept her secret. It would be hard today, but in the 1940's it had to be extremely difficult.
Does Lizzy seem too motherly toward Leah? At first I thought this too, and then I got to thinking that her own mother wasn't very motherly to her. I applauded Lizzy for filling this gap in Leah's life.
Is Lizzy trying to play peacekeeper at the table? Yes, it does seem this way. But I think they needed a peacekeeper before things got out of hand and things were said that couldn't be taken back.
Does the father seem overly concerned about the relationship(?) between Leah and Jonas? Yes, in my opinion he is way out of line, but here we go again with it being 1940. It was different back then, parents had much more say in who their children socialised with or dated.
What about Jonas' family's attitude toward Leah helping her father. Gosh Heaven, help me out on this one. I had to return my book to the library and can't remember??
Is it a blessing that Leah was hurt, so that she could be inside for a while. and learn what they do in there. Yes, I think it is too and in my opinion so does Leah. I also think it is great that her father gets to see just how much he depended on her.
Derry's reaction to Sadie at the cousins, as if he didn't know her, was that for her benifit or was he just being a jerk. (sorry i try so hard to keep my feelings out of the questions.)
that one just totally erked me. This one irked me too! It's not like he isn't familiar with the Amish, he works for her cousin (?). He could have a least said hello. I don't feel that would have been out of line. If the Amish didn't accept him then he wouldn't have been there to begin with, work or not.
Gideon really seems to like Leah do you think he would be an appropate choice? Yes, I do. They seem to get along great and really enjoy each other's company. I was thrilled to see Leah finally finding someone for herself.
Sadie and her mother both have the flu what are your thoughts on that one?? I won't say what my first thought was! But I did think it was odd they were the only 2 in the family that had it and no one else got it.
Was it right of Lizzy not to say anything about finding the handkerchief in the cabin knowing it was one of the girls? Yes, in my opinion it was. Sometimes we all needed an adult to confide in, or just to understand what is going on in our lives. I liked how she left it neatly folded so Sadie also knew that "someone" else knew she had been there.
What is Lizzy really saying when she asked if "must history repeat itself?" I haven't a clue, but hope to find out soon!
Sadie sent a note to Derry was that a smart move? No, but I think most of us as teenagers have done some dumb things. I don't think she is catching on that he isn't as interested in her, as she is in him.
Is it a good thing that the grandfather moved in with them? Yes, I think it is. He has the wisdom of life. He can step back and see things parents can't and be a sounding board or someone to go to for advice that won't judge you, but makes "YOU" think things through.
Was it approprate that Sadie left the stand to leave with Derry? No, she had a responsibility and ignored it for her own pleasure. But, like I said before, sometimes teenagers don't think past the here and now.
Sadie joined the church but didn't really mean what she was saying. what do you think I was quite shocked she did this, but then what else was there for her to do? Derry wasn't giving her any signals that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Hopefully more will be revealed later.
Was Leah leading Gid on by going to the singing with him. No, I don't think so, she told him (or his sister, I can't remember) up front that she wasn't interested in him that way.
Derry sent a note to Sadie to break up was that right?? No, all I could think was "What a coward!"
Sadie went to Derry's house, was that a smart move?? No, but I don't think she is thinking at all right now. She is very upset and doesn't want to accept that he doesn't want her.

thanks, I was at the part where the cousins were just totally amazed that Leah worked outside, had never been to a quilting and thought it was totally wrong of her to help her father outside.

Okay now I remember!

I can understand thier feelings on this, because it was 1940's. I don't neccisarily agree with it, but I do understand. Back then males and females had distinct jobs or boundries that you didn't cross. Especially if there was other boys (which there were plenty of) around. They could have used the barter system where Leah could have helped someone's family member and one of thier boys could have helped her father with the farming. I was surprised she did so much physically hard work. I expected her (and her sisters) to milk the cows and feed the chickens etc. I didn't expect her to be out in the fields or cleaning a barn all alone. Thier barns are huge!!~~ Dee ~~

Could you have kept the secret that Leah was asked to keep Yes, I'm really good at keeping secrets.
Did Lizzy seem to motherly towards Leah I'm not sure considering what I think the outcome of this relationship is.
Is Lizzy trying to play peacemaker at the table Yes, but I too think she needed to. I also wonder if she was afraid something might come out that she didn't want too.
Does the father seemed overly concerned about the relationship between Leah and Jonas Considering this is a book about the Amish, I would have to say no. There is just something about the relationship between Leah and the father that I'm not comfortable with.
What about Jonas' family's attitude about helping out her father ??
Is it a blessing that Leah got hurt and had to be inside It definitely is a blessing. Not that she shouldn't have known some of the work that was involved outside, but she should have also been taught all that went on inside. I also believe she should have been able to spend time with young woman her own age, rather than in the barn with dad all the time!!!
Derry's reaction to Sadie Sorry heaven, I'm shortening the questions a bit. It irked me too!!! But then again, he irked me period.
Gideon really seems to like Leah I think he is good for Leah, in that they became friends. I don't think though that Leah will end up with Gideon. I have a suspicion that Sadie just might!!
Sadie and her mom both have the flu A bit odd wasn't it!!
Was it right of Lizzy not to say anything about finding the "handkerchief" Not sure on this one. I do like the fact that she folded it and kept it out, but wonder if something shouldn't have been said. Like I said, not sure on this one.
What is Lizzy saying when she says "does history have to repeat itself" I'm sure it has to do with Lizzy giving birth to either Sadie or Leah (Leah I think!!)
Sadie sending a note to Derry, was that a smart move No but as teenagers didn't we all do those types of things??
Is it a good thing that the grandfather moved in with them Whether it is or not, will find out in the next book. It is part of the Amish life though and I respect them for it.
Sadie joined the church but didn't mean what she was saying Funny, but isn't that the way some people are today. I don't think she should have joined though, when she really didn't want too.
Was it appropriate that Sadie left the stand to go with Derry Nope, she had a responsibility that she should have been doing, but again, teenagers will be teenagers!!
Was Leah leading Gid on by going to the singing with him I don't think so. They were friends.
Derry sent a note to break up He was a coward but many young guys are the same way, even today.
Sadie went to Derry's house Not a smart move.
I personally think that Derry is going to prove to us that were all wrong about him. In knowing that the next book is called "Betrayal", I have a sneaky suspicion were going to all be blown away about the characters we now know.

Heaven,
I think alot of pressure was placed on Leah and that the others were not as understanding of her as they should have been. Leah didn't have a choice in being "Abrams Leah". I did think it was a blessing that she was hurt and finally got to be inside and see what the "girl" part was like. I really love Leah and I do think Sadie was unfair to ask her to keep such a huge secret.
As for Leah and Jonas, I think the father wants her to be Gideons because he likes the look of their farm so close to his own and he doesn't feel that Jonas is good enough or maybe has enough. I think Leah did lead Gid on just a bit by going to the singing with him but she really didn't have much choice since his sis was her friend.
As for Sadie, gosh she sounds like me when I was young. Just tell her what to do and watch her do the opposite. I think the Derry boy was nothing but trouble since the beginning of the book and it looks like he has shown his true colors. As for the flu, I think that is more like morning sickness!!!! Sadie is not showing good sense but then when you're in love you don't always do that. She is being taken advantage of by Derry.
Now that Lizzie, I do think she is motherly towards Leah but towards Sadie too. I think that she has a dark secret that will come out maybe in the next book. I think she should have confronted the girls and tried to get some sense in Sadie.
It's a great book (I have finished it).
