I watched the DVD of Planet of the Apes the other evening. I enjoyed the storyline a lot more than the original series, the humans were not as "animalized".. the special effects were amazing. My husband hooked the DVD into our stereo system, and the sound is amazing too.
I saw this in the theater with hubby. I have to admit, I liked the first one. The latest one, I enjoyed too.
I agree, the apes were much better this time around.
I really enjoyed the special effects and makeup, but I miss the big dramatic ending the 1960's one had.
I think it is always difficult to reimagine an older movie. Most often the expectations run so high the poor new movie doesn't have a chance. I thought this movie did well, but of course, for diehard Planet of the ape fans, I am sure it was lacking.

Gee, you'd figure after having 20 years to think about it they'd come up with a better story line. Worst movie of the year, in my opinion. Yes the apes looked really good, but I'm sure it still had Roddy McDowell rolling in his grave LOL
