Arrow BOOK REVIEW - Extreme Simplicity

By Christopher and Dolores Lynn Nyerges.

Philosopher Henry Thoreau achieved his pastoral vision on the banks of pristine Walden Pond. For many "simple living" is synonymous with a return to nature. Not Christopher and Dolores Lynn Nyerges. They have created their simple paradise by bringing nature to their ordinary home on an ordinary street in bustling Los Angeles.

The Nyergeses are gentle survivalists. Prepared to cope with the worst that nature or human craziness can deliver-earthquakes and droughts, power failures or terrorist attacks - they have devised ways of

    *growing and preserving garden produce
    *finding wild edibles
*harvesting storm runoff for backup water supplies
*preparing food with a wood stove and solar cooker
*recycling everything from bottle caps to wood chips

Extreme Simplicity brings good humor, adaptability, and a passion for self-reliance to the challenges of living in the city. Get radical in your home town. The Nyergeses will show you how.
This is one book I'm glad I didn't purchase. Although I'm glad I read it, its a book that is very focused on the Nyergeses and how they live. Most of what was in the book, I already do as do many of you. I was a little disappointed in the book.

In the description, they talk of good humor. I seen very little of it. I did see a passion though for self-reliance and how they succeeded at doing it, living in the city.

I would recommend the book for anyone starting out in self-reliance. I would also recommend if your going to read the book, not to purchase it until you have read it from the local library first. In my opinion, it isn't worth the $$. There are far better books on self-reliance.

One thing I must say here, is I wouldn't mind taking one of their classes especially in eating wild edibles. Here is their website:'

Here is another site you might find interesting that is mentioned in the book: http://www.realgoods.com/

Thank you for the review of this book. I might have mistakenly bought it thinking it would have more of interest in it than it did. I would have been drawn in by the humor aspect of it.

I might pick it up if I ever chance to come across it at a tag sale or garage sale but I would not purchase it new now that I have read your review. Thanks for taking the time to let us know about it.
Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations.” --Henry David Thoreau
