BookClub: Eat Cake Discussion Question 1
Ruth soothes her family conflicts with cake. Do you use food to soothe and comfort your family? In your particular case, is doing so more healthful or harmful?

I bake when I want to show my family how much I love them. Mostly, I do what Dr. Phil would call "medicating" myself with food. I eat when I'm upset or bored, hence my weight problem. I do have special meals that I call "comfort food" - the types of things that always taste good when you're not feeling well, either physically or spiritually.

No I can't say that I do. Although we like to go for a coffee and a nice slice of fancy cake when out shopping on a Saturday, I find it very soothing, and it gives you the little boost you need to battle with the crowds etc.

I am guilty of trying to sooth things with food at times. I did this more when Ryan was little than I do now.

I do use it in a way as comfort. Coffee is always a soother here. Popsicles for the kids, dessert after meals, etc. Baking makes me feel better if I'm having an off day too. I know the family enjoys it when I bake.
Soups when sick. Desserts as a surprise. I think mealtime can be comforting for families, so I think in my case it's more healthy than harmful. If you'd like to help support Frugal Living by Sara Noel, my syndicated column, e-mail, write, or call the managing editor at your local newspaper and ask them to publish it in print or online.
