So...our city is getting a Super Walmart
I didn't think our city was large enough for one. (there's one half an hour away in a larger city) Everything is dug up and they are expanding our current Walmart and making it a Super Walmart. A Best Buy is going up right next to it and a Home Depot was just built right next to it this past year.
Say goodbye to our little city....it's growing by leaps and bounds now.
We've only been here just shy of 4 yrs and have had so many big businesses built. (Kohl's, Michaels Petco, Barnes and Noble, Marshalls, MS Sports, Blockbuster, Dollar Store, etc)
I don't know how they plan to route the traffic. The city is built in a way that doesn't support much traffic. We don't even have a busline here.

It's nice to have those stores when you want them but I wish you could press a button and they hide & turn into beautiful farmland and pastures the rest of the time. IRL though once the fields are gone, they are gone.
I shop at our super Walmart for most of my groceries except produce, meat, loss leaders & things with coupons. My other grocery store doubles the coupons and their meats & veggies are so much better.~*Darlene*~

We just got our Super Walmart last May and I'm so thankfull for it. I know a lot of people hate them but we needed it so badly.
We only had two grocery stores and an Ace Hardware store. We did have a lot of smaller business' who tried to stock products that were needed but when I moved here 5 years ago, we had to travel 70 miles one-way to buy socks and underwear or you could order them out of the JC Penny calalog store.
Now most of our smaller business are closed and that is sad but having SWM here has made our lives so much more convenient and we have a variety now and we don't have to spend as much money.
Our populations grew faster than the business' and that meant we paid a lot more to have stuff shipped in here.
So in our case, I'm glad SWM is here but I understand when your little town just isn't the same anymore. I had that happen in Missouri and it makes you yearn for the wide open spaces."Success on any major scale requires you to accept responsibity."

Sorry about your little city growing so fast. The city closest to us (1 hr.) is having the same growing. They just build a huge Home Depot and there is talk that a new Walmart will be going right next to them.
BUT to be quite frank, I hate the super Walmarts. They have literally destroyed our small towns here in Canada. The little stores can't compete so they are having to close. Walmart also builds box type stores so that you only go into their store, rather than walking through their store to go into a mall. During our harsh winter months, its so cold and yet now there is hardly any malls for seniors to walk in. Getting in and out of your cars with kids or if your a senior is very time consuming and not at all nice when its -40C.
If at all possible, I stay out of Walmart. Its so sad to see the local businesses having to close down in all our smaller towns. Soon there won't be a rural Canada or rural America.

Each time I go home I am surprised at the size of the city. It used to be everyone knew just about everybody else and so on. That was a good and bad thing. However the town was floundering and most people had to go elsewhere to find work. Once the bigger busineses started comming in, people were able to "come home" and the townspeople were once again able to work in the town. It is mixed blessings. Now they have a "Super" walmart, Target and K-Mart. It's great for the economy and being it is a touristy place in the summer, most of the mom and pops have been able to stay around. There ia a big push to continue to "Buy Maine" so alot of the mom and pop's do well for that as well. I just miss it so much.

Sara, I know how you feel. Where we are now has 3 (yes I said 3) SWM and are getting another one in between here and the next town over (they have one as well). I am feeling overpopulated by wally's. sigh

My condolances. I hate walmart even though even I have to use it for some things. So many people see only the "low, low prices" and fail to notice that the selection is poor and all the "great jobs" the store promised pay very little.
I shop small, local businesses whenever I can. Secondhand is even better.

We live in an extremely small town but the next town over has just gotten a SWM. I shop there on occaission but prefer to buy 2nd hand when there is a choice. The SWM that we frequent is not at all convenient to get to so that makes it easier for me to stay away from it.
