Default I don't understand... cnn article

There's an article at cnn that i read that says a girl died from a skin cream. she apparently bought it, spread it on her body from waist to ankles and then wrapped her self in cling wrap... I understand that she died from it, but what I don't understand is why someone would do it...is it a beauty treatment? Is the cream supposed to be used in that manner?

I feel bad for the family, very sad.

here's the article, maybe someone else will understand better than I and can explain it to me?

Maybe because it was prescription strength and the plastic wrap intensified the absorption into her body????? How sad.

The cream that she was given was a prescription strength and should have been regulated by a MD. From the various articles that I read after doing a search on google about this I have learned that the over the counter strength is 4% Lidocaine but the cream that they gave her was a compounded drug meaning it had 2 active ingredients in the cream, lidocaine and tetracaine, the lidocaine in the cream was a 10% strength so it was 1 1/5 times the OTC creams. She had a reaction to the lidocaine which lead to seizures and then brain and heart damage and ultimately death. This is so sad, this could have all been avoided if the "spa" that she was going to for the lasar hair removal had been regulated and had not given out prescription medications without a prescription. The spa has shut down since this young woman died.

What a tragic story. I am saying a prayer for her family.
