That doesn't surprise me. My dh used to belong to the UFCW, years ago. I'm pro-union and anti- Wal-Mart, so I guess I can't give an unbiased opinion.

I was in a Unionized plant for 5 years. I feel that "In The Day" unions served their purpose. Even today they do to an extent. They keep companies "honest" -- at least more so than they used to be....BUT I've also seen employees hide behind their contracts.
The company I worked for was a local pottery and I believe the union killed it. The workers (about 1/2) only did what they had too to get by. They looked on the place as "just a paycheck" rather than their "livelyhood"...KWIM?
What Wal-Mart is doing doesn't surprise me in the least...They wouldn't be able to keep their prices down if a union got in. Every year the contract would raise pay ....consequently their prices would raise more and more.
Being an "at will" employer, they can get rid of anyone they want...What surprises me is that they will choose 2 mediocre employees over 1 excellent employee...just because it costs less....
Long/Short...Short term: this gives them more coverage for less pay....Long term: this costs them repeat customers as people want a good price AND quality service! At least, that's what I've found.
