Thumbs up Book Review- Cheap Eating by Pat Edwards

Cheap Eating- How To Feed Your Family Well And Spend Less by Pat Edwards- ISBN 0-942679010-5

I did a search in our libraries catalog system on "cheap" and found this book. I started reading it last night, so this isn't a review of the full book, bu so far it is pretty good. Along with some recipes toward the end, it is filled with a lot of really basic tips for people who are just starting their trip of frugality (how to plan menus, shopping strategies, etc), and every once in a while, there is something in there that might be helpful for those of us who have been frugal for a long time.

For instance, she mentions that you should really consider your trash bill when you grocery shop, since the trash bill would cost you less if you were making less trash. This never occurred to me while I was actually shopping. I don't generally buy things in little pre-packaged snack sizes (for helath, economic, and environental reasons), but this is great incentive to do it even less, and to try to buy even more that can be recycled and less packaging overall. If I do this, maybe I can get back to trash pick-up every two weeks instead of every week and cut my trash bill in half.

Anyway, if you can get your hands on this book from the library, I'd say go for it, even if you are a blackbelt frugalista. My version wasn't published by a big name publisher, so it may not be all that easy to get. I'm sure all the info isn't new or perfect, and I wouldn't recommend buying it, but I think (for free from the library) I will get a few good ideas from it.

Oh, I forgot to mention she does this all without skimping on nutrition, according to a home-ec teacher who reviewed it (Lol!)

Thank you for the review.. it sounds like a book I might like to look into. I wish my trash bill varied, but it's linked together with my water bill, and it's a fixed amount every month...blah!

I've read that book, but it was a while ago. If I remember correctly, it was pretty good.

My trash is a set amount each month too. The only way to change it, is to not have any trash.
