Long Island Marine Killed In Iraq

Family: Kremm Enlisted After Sept. 11 Attacks

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. -- Days before his death, a U.S. Marine from Long Island sent his mother a letter telling her not to worry. 24-year-old Lance Cpl. Jared J. Kremm said that his mission in Iraq was going well and that he would be home soon.

Kremm and another Marine from Cleveland died Thursday of wounds suffered from an explosion in Saqlawiyah, Iraq.

Both were deployed with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

A graduate of Hauppauge High School, where he played football, Kremm enlisted in the Marines after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He had previously worked as a chef and attended Suffolk County Community College.

He left for Iraq a year ago, returned to the U.S. on leave last spring, and returned to the battlefield in late summer. He hoped to become a police officer.

More than 2,000 American troops have died in Iraq since the war began; 13 have come from Long Island.

Killed along with Kremm Thursday was 23-year-old Lance Cpl. Robert F. Eckfield Jr., of Cleveland.

I pray for this war to end!

My inlaws used to live in a town relatively close to Happauge. I know the 911 attacks really hit close to LI. My dsil and dbil were headed into Manhattan from LI, when the terrorists attacks occured. They have since moved upstate, near Albany. They feel safer there.
