Bookclub discussion #1 - Everyday Cheapskate's
Because of all thats going on right now, I'll be doing each book every few days. This is discussion #1 for Everyday Cheapskate. I'll be asking 5 questions per discussion. Hope that works for everyone and doesn't make it too pressured.
IF YOU HAVEN'T READ TO PAGE 107, SKIP THIS THREAD UNTIL YOU HAVE
1. Have you read any of Mary Hunt's books before?
2. Did you purchase the book or get it from the library for this bookclub?
3. Do you like the lay out of the book? Do you like that she went in alphabetical order in each department or would you have preferred she had done it differently?
4. Did you find out anything new in the automobile section? And did she give enough time to automobiles?
5. From babies, to clothing, to books, cleaning and cooking - did you learn anything you haven't learnt here at the village? If so, what?
Again, did she spend enough time on each area or did it seem rushed to you?

I was not able to obtain this book however I have read other of Mary Hunt's books in the past. I have always had to purchase any books of hers as my local library does not have them and my friends would never be bothered to read a book such as hers. ( Sometimes I dont think my friends are all that bright
)
I find that I rarely use anything from the automobile section in any frugal book that I read as DH takes care of the cars. I just put in gas if I need it and drive.
Sorry I cant contribute more but without the book, I am at a loss

1. Have you read any of Mary Hunt's books before?
No, but I've read her columns before
2. Did you purchase the book or get it from the library for this bookclub?
Had to purchase it. CJ's warning came a little too late for me.
3. Do you like the lay out of the book?
No, it jumped around a lot.
Do you like that she went in alphabetical order in each department or would you have preferred she had done it differently?
It was just okay that way. Might come in handy to look up certain areas but I don't know of a better way to do it different.
4. Did you find out anything new in the automobile section? And did she give enough time to automobiles?
2 things. Use baking soda to get rid of tar and vinegar for frost free windows. Everything else I already knew from various other sources. I felt she could have done better in this area esp. on ways to save on maintenance, repairs and fuel costs.
5. From babies, to clothing, to books, cleaning and cooking - did you learn anything you haven't learnt here at the village? If so, what?
They're probably all here on the village and I still haven't read all the back posts but there was 2 off hand ~picture postcard(I'll use this idea for any gift giving occasion)~chocolate chip stand in
Again, did she spend enough time on each area or did it seem rushed to you?
Seemed very rushed to me.

My library does not have. Yesterday I even checked the library in the next town-I figured I could read there. I can't find this book

No

Libary, picked it up yesterday
3. Do you like the lay out of the book? Do you like that she went in alphabetical order in each department or would you have preferred she had done it differently?
The layout seems fine. Its easy to find each section
4. Did you find out anything new in the automobile section? And did she give enough time to automobiles?
I didn't see anything new, and I'm sure there could have been much more information givenl. The section was very sparce and useless for me.
5. From babies, to clothing, to books, cleaning and cooking - did you learn anything you haven't learnt here at the village? If so, what?
Again, did she spend enough time on each area or did it seem rushed to you?
I didn't see anything really useful that I hadn't learned here or before. I also think she missed on the two biggest money savers with babies, cloth diapers and breastfeeding. I think there are a lot more ways to save $. Wipes made from papertowels are good. Wipes made from small washcloths WAY better. Eh, I could go on
So far, I'm not overly thrilled with the book. It's not going on my "to buy" list!

So, I'm running a bit behind on my reading (which is silly, since this is a very quick read)... so here are my responses:
1. Have you read any of Mary Hunt's books before?
No, this is my first one.
2. Did you purchase the book or get it from the library for this bookclub?
I purchased it at half-price online.
3. Do you like the lay out of the book? Do you like that she went in alphabetical order in each department or would you have preferred she had done it differently?
The overall layout seems fine to me, and the alphabetical order works for me, since it makes it easier to find something particular. It would've also been great to have an overall index in the back of the book.
4. Did you find out anything new in the automobile section? And did she give enough time to automobiles?
I was disappointed with this section. I would've liked to read more about how to save on fuel costs, since it's the largest ongoing expense related to automobiles.
5. From babies, to clothing, to books, cleaning and cooking - did you learn anything you haven't learnt here at the village? If so, what?
I don't have babies yet, but I'm sure some of these tips will come in handy when I do. I didn't learn anything new in the Books or Clothing sections, but there was a lot of great advice in Cleaning. I haven't tried any of it yet, but will definitely keep some of it in mind. In Cooking, nothing particular jumped out at me, although it's good to be aware of the substitutes.
6. Again, did she spend enough time on each area or did it seem rushed to you?
I thought many areas were pretty light. Probably the most useful so far was the Cleaning area.
