1. What do you think became of the fugitive?
I like to think he got away but with Liggett and his men on his trail they may have caught up with him.
2. Why was there mud on Uncle Jacob's quilt?
He'd been wiping his boots with it.
3. Who do you think paid for Mr. Schultz's ransom?
I wasn't sure at this point.
4. Dorothea is very quick to still condemn Mr. Nelson. Why do you think that continues. Do you think she will give him the message from the author William Lloyd Garrison?
I thought she may pass on the message eventually but she still thinks he has a high opinion of himself so it would take some time.
5. What did you think when Uncle Jacob did not pick Dorothea up at the required time.
I thought something had happened to him, maybe Cyrus and Liggett had attacked him.
6. Reading a few pages further, we now realize why Uncle Jacob hasn't picked up Dorothea. Do you think Mr. Liggett was involved or did Uncle Jacob die of natural causes?
Now I think he probably did die of natural causes, everything points to that.
7. When Lorena found out that Uncle Jacob was dead some of her first words were "Praise the Lord, we are delivered". Do you think she didn't care for her brother or was she just relieved to finally be out from under his thumb?
I think that Lorena was just glad that they were free of his domineering ways. Also the prospect of the farm being left to her son so they wouldn't lose their home was another factor.
8. Where do you think Uncle Jacob's horse is?
The 'passenger' took it I think so that he could continue with his escape.
9. Have you ever seen sap running or the process of making maple syrup.
No
10. What do you think is in the will?
Just what they hoped for I think, the farm will be left to the son.
11. Were you surprised to find out Uncle Jacob paid for part of Constance's freedom?
Not after I found out he was helping the slaves.
12. Were you surprised to find out what Uncle Jacob's quilt was for?
No as I had read the books jacket.
13. Do you think Dorothea has the strength and where with all to carry on Uncle Jacob's work?
Yes I do, she is a very determined young woman.
14. Why do you think Uncle Jacob did not trust Dorothea's parents when it came to helping out the slaves? They seem more than willing to help Dorothea. Do you think they will?
I think they will, yes, but I believe that their attitude towards him made him wary.

1. What do you think became of the fugitive?
I think he got away.
2. Why was there mud on Uncle Jacob's quilt?
He keeps wiping his muddy boots on it for some reason.
3. Who do you think paid for Mr. Schultz's ransom?
Nelson- he went to talk to the captors, and he has the finances to do it.
4. Dorothea is very quick to still condemn Mr. Nelson. Why do you think that continues. Do you think she will give him the message from the author William Lloyd Garrison?
Not sure about the message, but I think she continues to be harsh to him because she is still working under the thought that he is a criminal and she is still hurt by what he said.
5. What did you think when Uncle Jacob did not pick Dorothea up at the required time.
I thought maybe Liggett had attacked him.
6. Reading a few pages further, we now realize why Uncle Jacob hasn't picked up Dorothea. Do you think Mr. Liggett was involved or did Uncle Jacob die of natural causes?
Well, nobody seemed to find any evidence of foul play, and I hardly think Liggett would have brought him to everyone's attention if he had killed him. So, I say natural causes.
7. When Lorena found out that Uncle Jacob was dead some of her first words were "Praise the Lord, we are delivered". Do you think she didn't care for her brother or was she just relieved to finally be out from under his thumb?
It would appear that she didn't care for him much AND she was glad to be out from under his thumb. However, she is really much more horrid than he ever was, because I don't think he wanted anyone in his family dead. Two grown adults shold be able to take care of themselves and not rely upon others, and should certainly not be resentful of the restrictions they have when allowing someone else to take care of them.
8. Where do you think Uncle Jacob's horse is?
Don't know.
9. Have you ever seen sap running or the process of making maple syrup.
Yes- we tapped trees on our property and made syrup at least once when I was a kid.
10. What do you think is in the will?
Given how Uncle Jacob acted at the end (crying about Cyrus) I would say he does care about his family and that the son will get the farm.
11. Were you surprised to find out Uncle Jacob paid for part of Constance's freedom?
Yes and no- I wasn't sure initially where he stood, but I knew there was definitely something more to him- a better person underneath the gruff exterior.
12. Were you surprised to find out what Uncle Jacob's quilt was for?
No, but only because I read the dust jacket. If not, I would still have been a bit perplexed about it.
13. Do you think Dorothea has the strength and where with all to carry on Uncle Jacob's work?
Yes, I do.
14. Why do you think Uncle Jacob did not trust Dorothea's parents when it came to helping out the slaves? They seem more than willing to help Dorothea. Do you think they will?
They don't have strength of character. They seemingly committed themselves to their utopia, then when it flooded, they completely gave up. They allow Jacob to run roughshod over them despite what they are really thinking and feeling. They seem to be all talk and very little action, and they talk too much. But yes, I do think as long as Dorothea is involved, they will help. Hopefully this will be their chance to turn it around.

1. What do you think became of the fugitive?
I think that he was able to get away.
2. Why was there mud on Uncle Jacob's quilt?
He cleaned his boots with it.
3. Who do you think paid for Mr. Schultz's ransom?
Not sure.
4. Dorothea is very quick to still condemn Mr. Nelson. Why do you think that continues. Do you think she will give him the message from the author William Lloyd Garrison?
He did hurt her feelings and she can't forget that, she thinks he is uppity. Also, that he may be a criminal, she still in not sure. I do think she will give Mr. Nelson the message, but maybe not right away.
5. What did you think when Uncle Jacob did not pick Dorothea up at the required time.
Something serious must have happened to him.
6. Reading a few pages further, we now realize why Uncle Jacob hasn't picked up Dorothea. Do you think Mr. Liggett was involved or did Uncle Jacob die of natural causes?
I was surprised that was the reason for not picking Dorothea up. I do think that he died from natural causes though.
7. When Lorena found out that Uncle Jacob was dead some of her first words were "Praise the Lord, we are delivered". Do you think she didn't care for her brother or was she just relieved to finally be out from under his thumb?
I thought mostly disliked his ways and was happy to be from under his thumb and also thinking about who would get the farm.
8. Where do you think Uncle Jacob's horse is?
Not sure. Hard for me to guess.
9. Have you ever seen sap running or the process of making maple syrup.
Never.
10. What do you think is in the will?
I am almost sure that the son will finally own the farm.
11. Were you surprised to find out Uncle Jacob paid for part of Constance's freedom?
No I was not.
12. Were you surprised to find out what Uncle Jacob's quilt was for?
No. I was not surprised. Even if I had not seen the jacket, I recently saw a quilting episode on PBS and they talked about thes freedom quilts.
13. Do you think Dorothea has the strength and where with all to carry on Uncle Jacob's work?
Absolutely. The strong mind set is there.
14. Why do you think Uncle Jacob did not trust Dorothea's parents when it came to helping out the slaves? They seem more than willing to help Dorothea. Do you think they will?
I think he thought that they were weak. They would not follow through if there was trouble.
