One book that all of the women in my family have read (and a lot of my girlfriends) is THE RED TENT. It might be worth checking out...
Amazon.com
The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.

I second The Red Tent.
Also, The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffeneggar is really, really good.
My very favorite adult book is Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, who also happens to be my favorite author. He is a superb storyteller. He generally writes period fiction. Pillars of the Earth is set in the middle ages, many of his other books are set in WWII or Victorian times or the like.

I should add tha Follett does get a little too intimate with some of his details of encounters at times in just about every book, so if you have a real problem with that, you probably shouldn't read him. I just skip over most of it, but I try to discourage A Dangerous Fortune, particularly, if I think a person would really be bothered by that.
On a positive note, I just read that he has so many requests for a sequel to The Pillars of the Earth that he is finally writing one- can't wait! Will have to read POTE again. (I think I've read it three times now- it is huge, but I love it every time I read it.)

You know, Miranda, I was thinking we had very similar literary preferences after reading a few of your posts in the Book Challenge thread. I don't read too much Sci-fi (I do like fantasy, though) but I do like Sci-fi movies.
I'm sure there are some diverging tastes (I love Agatha Christie, how 'bout you?) but I think I will check out many of the books you post about in the future.

If you like mysteries I would recomend anything by James Patterson. Also a good author is Sharon McCrumb I love the Rosewood Casket by her and also the Ballad of Frankie Silvers about the first woman ever hung in NC.
