Shocked
I'm feeling really shocked. I just woke and was checking emails when i read that Steve Irwin died.
He was one of those people my kids loved but annoyed the hell out of me.Over time i developed respect for the work he did and the man himself, and as many times as you watch him put him self in danger you never really thought he would get hurt.
I know in his kind of work its kind of asking for trouble but i am just very shocked.

Wow I'm surprised as well that he was killed by a stingray, a non-aggressive animal. He must have gotten too close to it and it stung him by accident.

It was the first thing I heard when the radio alarm came on this morning. Sounds like a really horrible freak accident.
I admire anyone who can be that passionate about what they do.
eta : ravenmoon mother where abouts in S Yorkshire are you? We were in Doncaster yesterday to watch the Lakers play the Widnes Vikings. We had a great time despite the rather erratic weather!

I'm not surprised given the line of work he was in, but I am surprised that it was by a sting ray and not by a more viscious animal. I guess he was right over the stin ray, and the sting ray's stinger struck him right in the heart.
I feel sorry for his wife and 2 young children

Hi britbunny i'm in sheffield, yes we do seem to be having interesting weather.
The thing about Steve Irwin is that he was a constant in our lives, with being on tv so much. My little boy would settle down with a "yeah! it's Steven" when ever he came on and he learnt alot from watching the shows.
This morning i had to tell him that Steven had died in an accident. He saw Steve Irwin as a friend and it was hard to tell him.
We talked about it and he knows that he can still see him on all the old shows, which made him a bit happier.
I also feel sorry for his family, his little girl seemed to be a real daddy's girl and i remember what it was like when my mum had to tell my brothers and sisters that my dad had died.

I can understand how your little boy could get that kind of connection with Steve. Some people can really get to a child's level can't they.
Dh did his masters at Sheffield Hallam and has some very fond memories of it. We don't go down there to often now we live in Lancashire but it has some amazingly beautiful areas and I've had nothing but good experiences there.

On our side of the "pond" we mourn the loss of such a passionate person. My dd 9 has watched every thing that guy has put out! She is passionate about becoming a vet and he has taught her to love and respect all creatures.
I am sorry for his family and sorry for humanity for losing such a passionate person.

My ds1 wants to operate a big cat sanctuary when he 'grows up' (tigers primarily, but also lions, leopards, panthers, cheetahs, etc.) so he enjoyed watching Steve and respected his work in the animal kingdom. I feel so sad for his family and staff.

I was shocked and sad to hear it too. Although his chatter drove me crazy, I always loved his shows and he had good information about the animals too. I was surprised that a *stingray* killedhim. They're not usually a big threat.

Steve opened the world's eyes to the reptiles of the world and showed us that beauty is truly everywhere. Wildlife has lost an incredible advocate today.
Steve's wife, Teri, grew up here in Oregon, not too far from here.
Steve, there are hundreds of animals waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. RIP

When I had cable I watched his shows every day. He had a fire and passion about the animals he worked with and his love for them was contagious. His energy was unending! He and his wife seemed to have a connection that was amazing. I am so sorry for the loss of his family, particularly his kids. The world is a bit darker without him.

Honestly it breaks my heart to know he is not with us anymore.. I thought he was one of a kind and cute to boot. I read that he lost his mom in a car accident in 2002 I think that was the year any way? I feel for his family...It saddens me to think of the fact that his children will not have their daddy anymore...Just wants me to hug and love my kids and hope that they are older when I die...Goes to show ya you never know!
