Don't eat that spinach!!
http://wcbstv.com/topstories/local_story_258064710.html
An outbreak of E. coli linked to the vegetable has killed one person and sickened dozens of others. So far, eight states have been affected: Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Oregon, New Mexico and Utah. But the warning affects the entire country.
It sounds like the dream of every child who hates spinach, but this government warning is as serious as it gets: Don't eat bagged fresh spinach because an outbreak of E. coli could kill you.

I read this in my local paper this morning. They are also advising to wash any bagged salad mixes you buy. I think I will be buying heads of lettuce for awhile.

We have thrown out all of ours. The five or six dollars I paid for two bags is not worth getting sick over. Washing the leaves does do work, but only if done in warm water according to an article I read on this yesterday. Our daughter is on a spinach kick and has been eating this stuff like candy so we have told her what to watch for.

Thanks Heather. I stopped using the bagged salad a while ago. It just didn't seem fresh to me. When they first came out I thought they were great.

Just a heads up to everyone still eating it after they wash it. A new report has come out this afternoon from the FDA saying even when washed in warm water, it is still contaminated. It said the e.coli is attached to the leaves and is too strong to be washed away.

I think its only the fresh sold in clear bags.Im not sure how long it will last.I think they have an idea of the processors that are responsible for the bad spinach but dont want to say anything yet.,I guess they are just being careful by saying throw out all fresh spinach.

I just heard on our news they are suggesting that any frozen with the date of August 1 or later to be thrown out too. They also suggested throwing out any mixed bagged salad.

Tainted spinach traced to California
Staff and agencies
15 September, 2006

WASHINGTON - A California natural foods company was linked Friday to a nationwide bacterial outbreak that has killed one person and sickened nearly 100 others.
Food and Drug Administration officials said Friday that they had received reports of illness in about 20 states.
FDA officials stressed that the bacteria had not been isolated in products sold by Natural Selection Foods but that the link was established by patient accounts of what they had eaten before becoming ill. "It is possible that the recall and the information will extend beyond Natural Selection Foods and involve other brands and other companies, at other dates," said Dr. David Acheson, the chief medical officer with the FDA‘s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

I saw that. A few weeks ago I either red in the paper or saw on the television that in some areas they were having the same problem with pre-packaged salad mix.
